Rent Historic Cabins
St. Joe National Forest
A cabin and a lookout tower have become available this month for rent on the St. Joe National Forest.
Arid Peak Lookout, above the North Fork of the St. Joe River and the Route of the Hiawatha Rail-Trail, accommodates four people and is available for $25 a night.
Perched on a 20-foot tower, the lookout was built in 1934 to watch for forest fires sparked below by Milwaukee Railroad trains.
The lookout, which was used for 40 years and is on the National Historic Lookout Register, was restored for recreational use in 1996 and 1997. It includes two single bed frames, a table, chairs and a wood stove. The rental period ends Sept. 20.
Red Ives Ranger Cabin, 30-miles southeast of Avery near the St. Joe River and Spruce Tree Campground, has two bedrooms, a propane stove, lanterns and refrigerator, plus a bathroom with shower and flush toilet. Rental cost is $50 a night.
The cabin was built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and served as the home for the district ranger. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors must bring their own drinking water. The rental period ends Sept. 30.
