Obituaries

June Madsen Whidbey Island, Wash.

Service for June Madsen, 92, will be today at 10 a.m. at Green’s Funeral Home in Bellevue, Wash. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue.

Mrs. Madsen, who was born in Shelley, Idaho, died Friday.

She graduated from high school and from Hennigers Business College in Salt Lake City.

Mrs. Madsen began her career teaching at Hennigers and ended it 40 years later teaching at Kinman Business University in Spokane.

She also worked for Allied Purchasing Corp., starting as secretary to the manager at CC Andersons in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and then was transferred to Spokane as personnel manager and trainer for The Bon Marche.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in the Seattle Temple and taught classes.

Mrs. Madsen moved to Bellevue six years ago and had resided on Whidbey Island for the past year.

Survivors include two sons, Victor Madsen of Corvallis, Ore., and Ken Madsen of Roy, Wash.; a daughter, Janet Bardsley of Langley, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Rev. Reece ‘Bob’ Dixon Evans, Wash.

Graveside service and burial for the Rev. Reece “Bob” Dixon, 68, will be today at 1 p.m. at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Memorial service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Williams Lake Community Church in Evans. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The Rev. Dixon, who died Sunday, was born in Dayton, Ohio.

He served with the Air Force and the Army during World War II and the Korean War.

He was an interdenominational minister and was a member of the Williams Lake Church and Williams Lake Food Bank.

He was a 20-year Evans resident and had worked as a carpenter.

The Rev. Dixon is survived by his wife of 39 years, Virginia; three sons, Darrell Dixon of Colville, Wash., Reece Dixon III of Phoenix and George Calvin of Yelm, Wash.; four daughters, Linda Louie of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Della Pemberton, Leona Auston and Patricia Schmidt, all of Colville; his mother, Dorothy Adams of Dubuque, Iowa; a brother; four sisters; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Virgil Breithaupt Spokane

Private memorial service will be held for Virgil Warren Breithaupt. Private inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Breithaupt, 78, died Saturday.

He was born in Richland and was raised in St. John, Wash., where he graduated from high school.

Mr. Breithaupt served with the Army during World War II as a medic and in 1942 married Margaret Born in Coeur d’Alene. They moved to Spokane in 1965 from the Rosalia, Wash., area.

He worked on a cattle ranch and later started a landscape business, which he operated for more than 30 years, before retiring in 1997.

Mr. Breithaupt was a member of the Spokane Valley Assembly of God Church.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Arnola Eaton of Coeur d’Alene, Karen Pemberton of Kent, Wash., and Diane Breithaupt of Seattle; a son, Gerald Breithaupt of Puyallup, Wash.; three brothers, Harold Breithaupt of Pomeroy, Wash., Duncan Breithaupt of Dayton, Wash., and Martin Breithaupt of Las Vegas; a sister, Evelyn McPherson of Walla Walla; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

George Rowley Harrison, Idaho

No service will be held for George D. Rowley, 73. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rowley, who was born in Auburn, Wash., died Aug. 13.

Mr. Rowley served with the Navy during World War II and married Dorothy Mader in 1947.

He worked at the Bunker Hill Mine as an electrician in Grand Coulee, until he retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Bunker Hill Mine 20-Year Club and the Grand Coulee Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Dave of Spokane; a daughter, Cindy of Anchorage, Alaska; eight sisters, Nona Valley of Allyn, Wash., Vi Opp of Grand Coulee, Myrt Valley of Gig Harbor, Wash., Inez Parnell of Doyle, Calif., Bessie Atkinson of Wenatchee, Ev Garitone of Mullan, Idaho, Ida Kincaid of Tacoma, Wash., and Dorothy Johnson of Kingston, Idaho; and four grandchildren.

Janet Bowling Chelan, Wash.

Visitation for Janet M. Bowling, 63, will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Precht Rose Funeral Chapel in Chelan. Funeral is set for 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Chelan.

Mrs. Bowling, who was born in Wenatchee, died Sunday in Lewiston.

She previously lived for several years in Spokane, where she owned a ceramic shop.

Mrs. Bowling moved to Chelan 10 years ago.

She was a member of Lake Chelan Eagles Lodge No. 2218.

Her husband, James Bowling, died in 1984.

Survivors include three daughters, Melody Byrd of Ravensdale, Wash., Janet Rodarde of Auburn, Wash., and Frankie Zumwalt of East Wenatchee; a son, Terry Spessard of Anchorage, Alaska; her mother and stepfather, Eva Marie and Carl Fels of Spokane; a sister, Lorene McClellan of Chelan; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mary Lafferty Spokane

No service will be held for Mary E. Lafferty, a descendant of the Denny family, Washington state pioneers who helped found Seattle. Inurnment will be held at the Denny family plot at the Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery in Seattle at a later date. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Lafferty, a 62-year Spokane resident, died Friday.

She was born in Seattle and graduated from Rogers High School in Spokane.

Miss Lafferty retired in 1983 from Kaiser Aluminum Trentwood after 34 years as a spectographer.

During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s she held several state records as one the top women bowlers in the Northwest.

Miss Lafferty is survived by a brother, Aleck Lafferty of Seattle.

Floyd Hines Post Falls

Graveside service for Floyd H. Hines, 96, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hines, a longtime Post Falls area resident, died Saturday.

He married Mary Martha Knudsen in 1925, and she died in 1986.

He worked for more than 40 years as a machinist at Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood.

Mr. Hines was a member of Post Falls Community Presbyterian Church and the Post Falls Kiwanis.

Survivors include his son, Larry Hines of Post Falls; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Hynes Spokane

Visitation for Mary Hynes, 84, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hynes, who died Monday, was born at Redberry Lake, Saskatchewan.

She was a licensed practical nurse for 20 years at Deaconess Hospital.

Mrs. Hynes was a 75-year resident of Spokane, and was a member of Hillyard Baptist Church and the Better Breathers Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Zunker of Reardan, Wash.; a son, John Hynes of Brighton, Colo.; two sisters, Dusty Stratford of Spokane and Eva Miller of Kasilof, Alaska; a brother, Edward Dus of Spokane; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Anna James Spokane

Funeral for Anna F. James, 79, will be today at 11 a.m. at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. James, who died Monday, was a lifetime resident of Spokane and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Willard James Sr., died in 1971.

She is survived by a son, Willard James of Spokane; two daughters, Louise and Ida, both of Salem, Ore.; a sister, Neta James of Florida; and numerous grandchildren.

Teresa Overby Coeur d’Alene

Viewing for Teresa F. Overby, 91, will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday at English Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Overby, who was born in Poland, died Saturday.

She moved to the Silver Valley in the 1930s and was a homemaker and an artist who worked with oil paints and water colors.

She was a member of the Silver Valley Art Association, St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene and St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wallace.

Her husband, James Overby, died in 1994.

Survivors include a sister, Helen Fraynd of Spearfish, S.D.; a son, John Overby of Liberty Lake; a daughter, Marion Overby of Fairfield, Iowa,; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

Marion Barnhart Coeur d’Alene

Funeral for Marion May Barnhart, 79, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Cheney.

Mrs. Barnhart, who was born in Colville, Wash., died Monday.

She attended school in Colville, and married Dempsey Barnhart in Spokane in 1935.

In 1950 Mrs. Barnhart moved to the Sandpoint area and in 1952 established a community church in Careywood, Idaho. In 1997 she moved to Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include her husband; 10 sons, David Barnhart of Medical Lake, Philip, Paul and Charles Barnhart, all of Careywood, Gary and John Barnhart, both of LaGrande, Ore., Robert Barnhart of Rosemont, Minn., James Barnhart of Rochester, Minn., Daniel Barnhart of Coeur d’Alene and Timothy Barnhart of Rathdrum, Idaho; two daughters, Mary Hogan and Ruth Fisher, both of Omaha, Nebraska; 45 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Bertha Thorsen Spokane

Private inurnment for Bertha P. Thorsen, 82, was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Thorsen, who was born in Wallowa, Ore., died August 13.

She was a homemaker and a member of Christ Gospel Church. She lived in Spokane for 44 years.

Survivors include two granddaughters, Barbara and Dianne Thorsen, both of California, and three great-grandchildren.

Roy Gillis Washtucna, Wash.

Funeral for Roy Merle Gillis, 81, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Washtucna Community Church. Concluding services and vault burial will follow at Washtucna Pioneer Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gillis, who died Sunday, was a lifetime resident of Washtucna.

He graduated from Washtucna High School, and in 1933 married Ruth Sitton in Spokane.

Mr. Gillis was a wheat farmer, working the same land his father had farmed in Washtucna.

He was a member of Washtucna Community Church, the Rimrock Grange and the Ritzville Eagles Lodge No. 101.

His wife died in 1988.

Survivors include a brother, John Gillis of Enumclaw, Wash.; a sister, Velma Sitton of Kennewick; and two grandsons.

Dorothy Stephens Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Dorothy Evelyn Stephens, 78, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport.

Mrs. Stephens, who was born in Omaha, Neb., died Monday.

She graduated from high school in Nebraska and worked as a farmer, rancher and waitress in Oregon.

Mrs. Stephens moved to Priest River, Idaho, in 1967 and to Newport in 1992.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Newport and the Peninsula Ladies Club in Priest River.

Her husband, Arte Stephens, died in 1982.

Survivors include a son, Rocky Stephens of Newport; two daughters, Marcy Ryan and Judy Stephens, both of Newport; a foster daughter, Terri Duffield of Oregon; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Wanecek Loon Lake

Graveside service for Robert F. Wanecek, 74, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wanecek, a retired Spokane Fire Department captain, died Monday.

He was born in Kootenai, Idaho, and served with the Army during World War II in the Pacific.

Mr. Wanecek retired as a captain from the Spokane Fire Department in 1973 after 25 years.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Joyce; five sons, Ronald, Randall and David Buckner, all of Spokane, Timothy Riley of Elk, and Francis Wanecek of Wellington, Nev.; a sister, Patricia Auman of Snohomish, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren.

Charles ‘Wilbur’ Staples Newport, Wash.

Funeral for Charles “Wilbur” Staples, 69, was Saturday at ShermanKnapp Funeral Home in Newport. Graveside service followed at the Newport Cemetery.

Mr. Staples, who was born in Butte, Neb., died Aug. 11.

He married Wilma Crawford in 1950, and they moved to the Pend Oreille Valley area from Nebraska in 1952.

He worked for Diamond International Lumber Mill for more than 20 years and retired in the late 1970s.

Mr. Staples was a past member of the Newport Eagles, Pend Oreille Valley Advocacy for Disabled Citizens, and was active in the Noble Grange, Newport Rodeo Association and Pend Oreille County Fair Board.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Wayne, Ted and Larry Staples, all of Newport; two sisters, Mary Hendricks of Colorado and Nina Rieser of Nebraska; a brother, Don Staples of Clayton, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
