Fall Seniors Program Begins In September

The Seniors Program at the Community Colleges of Spokane is preparing for its fall session. All seniors age 55 and older are invited to sign up for classes. Tuition ranges from $5 to $30 per class, and a limited number of scholarships are available.

The classes, held in churches, senior centers and other locations around Spokane, include watercolor and oil painting, ceramics, a writers workshop, computer basics, German, Spanish, archaeology, genealogy, tai chi, clogging, water exercise, meditation and bridge.

Early registration is advised. The fall session begins in mid-September. For a complete class schedule, call the Seniors Program office at 533-3393.

Fiddle contest in Winthrop

Fiddlers of all ages will be making music at the North Cascades Oldtime Regional Fiddle Contest near Winthrop, Wash., on Saturday. The Winthrop Inn on the Methow River will be the site of the all-day fiddle extravaganza.

The contest will get started with the pee-wee division (kids age 11 and under) at 9 a.m. Competitions for other fiddlers will follow. All will be vying for $2,500 in prizes.

Camping areas will be available for those with tents or motor homes. Camping for the weekend is $20.

Admission to the fiddle contest is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors. Kids age 12 and under are free. For more information, call Brad Pinkerton at (509) 996-2111.

Art for juried yule show

The Corbin Art Center is searching for artists to participate in the 23rd annual juried Fine Arts and Crafts Christmas Sale Dec. 5-6. Artists living in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana are invited to apply.

Applications are available by calling 625-6677 or writing the Corbin Art Center at 507 W. Seventh, Spokane, WA 99204. Application deadline is Sept. 30.

Children’s Theatre audition

The Spokane Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for its upcoming production of “The Little Mermaid” on Saturday and Aug. 30. Auditions begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1620 N. Monroe.

Roles are available for seven boys and eight girls. Ten children age 5 and up are needed for the chorus. Auditioners should prepare a one-minute song. An accompanist will be provided.

Corbin seeks crafters, too

The Corbin Senior Activity Center is looking for creators of quality hand-crafted gifts and holiday decorations for its annual Autumn Holiday Bazaar on Oct. 10. Booth space, $15, can be reserved by calling 327-1584.

Spokane artwork in Twisp

Spokane artist Phyllis Gazette has her work displayed at a solo exhibit at the Confluence Gallery in Twisp, Wash. Gazette, a former teacher at West Valley High School, works in oils, enamels, scratch board, acrylic and metal sculptures. The exhibit runs through Oct. 3.

KUDOS Seven local quilters were accepted into the Great Pacific Northwest Quilt Show in Seattle. The international exhibition, which ran Aug. 7-9, displayed 252 quilts and wearable art garments selected from 550 applicants. Spokane quilters were Rebecca Abell, Janine Carlson, Christine Davis, Laurie Fleming, Margie Karavitis and Mary Lou Weidman, and Barbara Lembrecht of Chattaroy. “Drinking Buddy,” a photograph by Robert “Joe” Goad of Springdale, Wash., was a finalist in the North American Open Amateur Photography Contest in Maryland. In the fall, it will be published in the anthology “Everlasting Moments.” Spokane artist JoAnne Nixon has had her painting “Railroad Cars” selected for exhibition in the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition at the Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colo. It was one of 99 works selected from the 1,300 entries. The painting also received the Great Western Railway Award. The show runs through Oct. 18.
