Clarence ‘C.D.’ Hill Pullman

Funeral for Clarence D. “C.D.” Hill, 86, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman. Burial will follow at the Pullman City Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hill, a retired Pullman school teacher, died Wednesday.

He was born in Belle Fouche, S.D., and was raised on a farm.

After receiving a teacher’s certificate from Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, S.D., he was an elementary school teacher in Hayes, S.D., from 1935 to 1939. From 1939 to 1943 he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Portland and inspected and licensed warehouses in Oregon, Idaho, Washington state and Utah.

Mr. Hill enlisted in the Army during World War II and served as a first lieutenant in the Philippines as a scout, field artillery unit commander and training officer. He received the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Japanese Occupation Medal, the Meritorious Service Plaque and the Military Merit Medal from the Philippines Commonwealth.

He returned to the Northwest where he finished his undergraduate studies in agriculture at Washington State College.

In 1956 he married Bette Short in Spokane and for 23 years he taught at Pullman High School as the agriculture and shop teacher. He retired in 1974.

Mr. Hill took many Future Farmers of America students to local, county, state and national competitions. He developed the adult and continuing education classes during the 1970s that were sponsored by Spokane Community College. These were special interest classes such as upholstery and wood shop in the Pullman community.

He was a member of the Congregational Church in Pullman, Future Farmers of America, the Washington Education Association, the Retired Teachers Association, and was a past member of the Elks.

Mr. Hill is survived by his wife; two sons, Tony Hill of Portland and Larry Hill of Salem, Ore.; two daughters, Linda Ackerman of Portland and Susan Hill of Pullman, and a sister, Elsie Hill of Oakland, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of American or to the Humane Society in care of the funeral home.

Edna Lenz Marlin, Wash.

Funeral for Edna V. Lenz, 82, is set for 2 p.m. Monday at the Marlin Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the Marlin Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Odessa, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lenz, who died Thursday, was a lifetime resident of Marlin.

She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Aid of Marlin.

Survivors include her husband, Camas; two sons, Larry and Hugh Lenz both of Spokane; two sisters, Eva Hull of Spokane and Grace Kallenberger of Marlin; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Marlin.

Marie Borgens Spokane

Visitation for Marie Borgens, 89, will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash. The funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Vault burial will follow at the Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Borgens, who was born near Odessa, Wash., died Wednesday.

In 1927 she married Daniel Borgens in Ruff, Wash., and they lived and farmed in the Marlin, Wash., area until 1931.

From 1931 to 1952, they farmed near Ritzville and in 1952 they moved into Ritzville. Mrs. Borgens moved to Spokane in 1993.

Mrs. Borgens was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational Church.

Her husband died in 1986.

Survivors include two daughters, Cleola Jackman of Spokane and Norma Myers of Auburn, Wash.; a brother, Jake Kiehn of Odessa; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Philadelphia Congregational Church.

Patty Kensok Veradale

Funeral Mass for Patty L. Kensok is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kensok, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Wednesday at the age of 70.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a local hobby club for 40 years and was a summer resident of Twin Lakes, Idaho, for 35 years.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Raymond; two daughters, Sharon Kensok and Carol Measel both of Spokane; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Cinde Borup Sandpoint

A life celebration gathering will be held for Cinde J. Borup, 51, at 1 p.m. Satuday at The Farm, along Dufort Road in Sagle, Idaho. Coffelt Moon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Borup, who was born in Boise, died Tuesday at home.

She graduated from Borah High School in Boise and attended Boise State University.

In 1967 she married Rick Borup. He died in 1969.

Mrs. Borup traveled from 1970 to 1975 writing and performing music throughout the western states and Canada. She settled in Sandpoint and began the band ” Wild Roses.”

Survivors include her daughter Amy Borup of Portland; two brothers, Kenny Phippen of Craig, Ark., and Richard Breckenridge of Boise; a sister Wende Ellis of Boise; her musical partner of 28 years, Beth Pederson; and numerous cousins.

Kathryn Prescott Spokane

Funeral for Kathryn M. Prescott, a lifetime resident of Spokane, is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Prescott, 54, died Thursday.

She graduated from West Valley High School. In 1963 she married David Prescott in Spokane.

Mrs. Prescott was a member of Glad Tidings Church.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Becky and Elizabeth Prescott, both of Spokane; three brothers, Paul Crowe of Newport, Wash., William Crowe of Everett and Eddie Wood of Tennessee; and a sister, Gail Balderson of Spokane.

Florence De Staffany Spokane

Vigil service for Florence Ann De Staffany, 101, is planned for 4 p.m. Sunday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Miss De Staffany, who was born in Stillwater, Minn., died Thursday.

She moved to Spokane in 1919 and had worked for both the Welfare Department for the state of Washington for seven years and the Civilian Conservation Corps for five years as a secretary.

Miss De Staffany was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Altar Society and the Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Survivors include a sister, Kathryn Barnhill of Spokane.

Genevieve Loader Spokane

Memorial Mass for Genevieve C. Loader, 84, is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paschal Catholic Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Loader, who was born in Kenmare, N.D., died Aug. 13.

She was a 55-year resident of Spokane and a homemaker.

Mrs. Loader was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.

Her husband of 35 years, Donald Loader, died in 1969.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Foreman of Spokane and Maureen Journey of Bellevue. Wash.; a sister, Cleo Elliott of Spokane; five granddaughters and four greatgranddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paschal Parish.

Dennis McWilliams Orofino, Idaho

Graveside service for Dennis D. McWilliams, 52, was held Aug. 11 in Orofino. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home, Lewiston, handled arrangements.

Mr. McWilliams, who died Aug. 7 in Orofino, was born in Paso Robles, Calif.

He graduated from Yreka (Calif.) High School.

Mr. McWilliams ran and operated a recreational vehicle shop and did surveying in Yreka. He moved to the Orofino area in 1984 where he continued surveying.

Survivors include his son, Patrick McWilliams of Tusin, Calif.; two daughters, France Flemming of San Diego, and Carri Jo Gray of Spring Valley, Calif.; a brother, Allan McWilliams of Yreka; a sister, Joan Wright of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Alice Huff Kellogg

Memorial service for Alice Mae Huff, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Pinehurst. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Huff, who was born in Harding, S.D., died Thursday at Mountain Valley Care and Rehabilitation Center in Kellogg.

She grew up in Harding and attended Spearfish Normal College.

She married Murrin Huff on Christmas Day in 1928. He died in 1994.

Mrs. Huff taught at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, and in the Silver Valley from 1948 to 1966.

Survivors include her son, Wally Huff of Wallace; two daughters, Anita Hammond of Renton, Wash., and Althea Van Wyck of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Chester Davis of Berwyn, Ill., and Harold Davis of Coeur d’Alene; two sisters, Iva Skoglund of Springfield, Mo., and Laura Carrier of Lemon, S.D.; 10 grandchildren, and many great and great-great grandchildren.

Alta McKinney Spokane

Funeral services for Alta Belwood McKinney, 82, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel, Sandpoint. Interment will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park, Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McKinney, who was born El Reno, Okla., died Wednesday in Spokane.

She lived in Oklahoma and Colorado until she moved to the Northwest in 1933. She graduated from Sandpoint High School.

Mrs. McKinney worked for 12 years for J.J. Newberry’s in Spokane.

She married James McKinney in Colburn in 1938. They traveled in a motorhome, living in Apache Junction, Ariz., and Spokane. They settled in Spokane in 1996.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, James, at home; two sons, Robert McKinney of Federal Way, Wash., and William McKinney of Spokane; one daughter, Merry Spracklin of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Eldred ‘Fayne’ Cochran Colfax, Wash.

Funeral for Eldred “Fayne” Cochran, a lifetime resident of Whitman County, will be 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Colfax. Burial will follow at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cochran, who died Thursday, was 84. He was born in Colfax and raised on a farm near the town.

In 1944 he married Louise Adams in Steptoe, Wash. They lived and farmed between Colfax and Steptoe all their lives.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Colfax International Order of Odd Fellows, was on the board of directors of the Colfax Grange Supply and was a 60-year member of the Steptoe Grange.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry and Terry Cochran, both of Colfax; two daughters, Linda Riley of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Diana Braun of Redmond, Wash., and eight grandchildren.
