The Chase Youth Commission is accepting applications for its 1998-99 Teen Advisory Council. The Council assists the Chase Youth Commission and City/County officials in Spokane in addressing the concerns of Spokane area teens. Teen Advisory Council meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month from 7-9 p.m. Youth in grades 9-12 are eligible to apply. The deadline for applications is Sept. 17. Girls ages 12 to 18 are invited to a special presentation by Mary Pipher, author of the New York Times best seller “Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls,” on Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. in the Ferris High School Auditorium. This event is designed specifically for girls and will include small discussion groups after Pipher’s presentation. Pipher and local author Michael Gurian will present a dual talk the night before, Sept. 18, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Whitworth College. This presentation is targeted toward parents and educators, and will cover issues adolescent boys and girls face and how adults can help. For more information on this event, call 624-8422.
More than 3 million teens are expected to gather on their school campuses before school starts on Sept. 14 for the annual See You at the Pole — National Day of Student Prayer. Our Generation is looking for students who participated in the See You at the Pole event at their school last year to write a short (100-150) word essay about what it means to them to gather at their school’s flag pole for prayer with other students. Or, if you are a student who chooses not to participate, please tell us why. Send your essay to Our Generation/See You at the Pole, 999 W.
