The review: Anna Quindlen has written a gripping story about how an abusive relationship can develop between two people caught in a mutual web of love, physical attraction and dependent emotional needs. It helped us understand, at least in part, not only how two people can begin the long slide into an abusive relationship, but the fears and motivations that keep them there, and the extreme difficulty in getting out.
