Buying outdoor equipment is a sport in itself.

We’ve all bought junk that seemed essential in the store only to come upon it years later virtually unused in the back of a closet.

On the other hand, we’ve all bought good equipment like the Therm-a-Rest mattress, Coleman lantern or Swiss Army Knife that come to be old and dependable friends.

Following is an update and reality check on selected outdoor gear. Technological advances can tempt well-stocked outdoorsmen, because getting in gear is part of being a happy camper.
