Move over McCaughey septuplets - the Garza Seven are stealing some of the limelight. Local residents Sam and Rosa Garza proudly announce the birth of seven Chihuahua puppies to their 1-year-old dog, Chica. Since Chihuahua litters normally have only four pups, the Garzas are a tad awestruck. The pups were born Nov. 19, the birthdate of the McCaughey babies.
FERRY COUNTY

Local Cub Scouts have trimmed the loveliest tree in all of Republic - the Tree of Sharing. The tree, complete with 150 names of needy children and seniors, is on display at the SeaFirst Bank. Residents who want to help out a neighbor are asked to pick up a tag, purchase a gift and bring it back to the bank by Dec. 17.

With hay prices dropping like hot potatoes, local growers are hoping for a chilly winter. Local hay farmers say El Nino brought some of the worst haying weather in history, rendering most of their crops off-grade and worth less money. The only way they’ll get rid of crops, they say, is through a harsh winter with loads of snow.

Creston
If the town of Creston receives one more contaminated water sample it will be forced to permanently chlorinate its water supply. A water sample in early November, which detected coliform bacteria, caused temporary chlorination from Nov. 18-23. Coliform bacteria can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea and jaundice.

To be or not to be, that is the question. And if you want to be a playwright, don’t miss CREATE’s playwriting workshop today. The class, led by Warren Carlson, will be at CREATE Place at Fourth and Fea Streets from 3-6 p.m. Carlson has just finished his third full-length play. Participants are asked to bring a four-page scene to help them understand the road map of a script.

North Side weather observer Harry Vaughan recorded 4.22 inches of rain in November at his backyard weather station at 2718 W. Hoffman. By comparison, the National Weather Service reported 3.78 inches of rain at the airport for the month.
STEVENS COUNTY
Colville
Yet another Colville business was burglarized in a string of break-ins that dates back to early August. Carter Toyota Inc. was broken into last Saturday. The company’s safe was moved, but there was no evidence the burglar tried to open it. Nothing was taken. Local police are looking for leads and would appreciate any information citizens have to give.

Seniors Cherese Tuttle and Gavin Parberry were chosen “Students of the Quarter” for the first quarter of school. Gavin is the son of Gary and Rise Parberry and is involved with National Honor Society, Knowledge Bowl and basketball. He is senior class president and hopes to attend Rhode Island School of Design. Cherese is the daughter of Steve and Gail Tuttle and plans to attend North Idaho College before continuing on to law school at Gonzaga. She is senior class treasurer and also in the National Honor Society.

Entries for the annual Chamber of Commerce lighting contest are due Friday. Categories for the contest include best-lighted house, best fantasy and best religious display. Idaho Department of Agriculture training specialist Sherman Takatori will present a pesticide recertification class to pesticide applicators from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday. The community DARE program will now include fifth-grade students at Athol Elementary after a $442 donation from American Legion Post 149 in Athol. Money was raised from the raffle of a seven-foot windmill. The donation will provide books and T-shirts for DARE students.

The 32nd annual University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival will be Feb. 24-27 on the UI campus. Concerts will include the Pepsi International Jazz Concert Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m., the Northwest Airlines Special Guest Concert Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m., the All-Star Concert Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. and the GTE Giants of Jazz Concert Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available through the UI Ticket Office at (208) 885-7212 or 1-88-88-UIDAHO, and G&B Select-A-Seat outlets.

Kellogg High School is rewarding students with perfect attendance with “Attendance Bingo.” Students qualify for the bingo with perfect attendance every nine weeks. The first session was Nov. 5 with 58 students participating. Prizes were donated by local clubs and businesses.

The Troy Medical Arts Complex Fund-raising Committee recently received a $5,000 donation from the Plum Creek Foundation. The donation will help pay for medical equipment needed in the new physician’s clinic in Troy. Physicians from Libby see patients at the Troy clinic two days a week.

An open house to celebrate the addition of outpatient care for cancer patients will be Friday from 3-5 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital. Several kinds of chemotherapy treatments and follow up care for cancer patients are available at the hospital.
