WASHINGTON

Adams County Washtucna

Several traffic accidents involving deer have been reported on State Route 26 recently, with two car-deer collisions last week alone. Patricia J. Carrol of Kirkland and Cory J. Cooper of Arlington were uninjured in the two accidents, but damage to their vehicles was severe. State Patrol officers in the area urge caution when driving the highway near Washtucna.

Ferry County Republic

County coffers are $620,116 fuller these days. The National Forest Service gives states where national forests are located 25 percent of revenues from timber sales, grazing, recreation and minerals. Over $1.5 million from the Colville National Forest was split between Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties. The payment is used for schools and roads.

Grant County Ephrata

With a rapidly growing district, the Ephrata school board announced it will likely ask the public for a construction bond issue by November 1999. The bond will be for more classrooms and to upgrade and expand facilities. The district is studying projected enrollment and future needs to come up with a plan.

Lincoln County Wilbur

Chuck Wyborney, volleyball coach for the Wilbur-Creston Wildcats, is calling it quits. He has taken 14 teams to the State B Volleyball tournament in his 24-year tenure, and his girls have earned four state titles, including in 1998.

Pend Oreille County Metaline Falls

Four men were arrested and nine pounds of marijuana seized near the Canadian border. Federal, local and Canadian police made the bust. Immigration Officer John Norris noticed a car with two suspicious men re-entering the United States. He called the Border Patrol, who stopped the vehicle and found four men and the drugs. The men are being held in Pend Oreille County Jail.

Spokane County Deer Park

Deer Park senior Gina Bendowsky was named to the Great Northern League’s second-team volleyball squad through voting by conference coaches.

Stevens County Chewelah

Hoping to obtain state matching funds, the school district is drawing plans for a construction project. The Chewelah School Board approved $2,000 for an architect to draw up plans for a piece of property the district recently acquired, and look at improvements in existing facilities.

Whitman County Pullman

Linda Randall, a professor at Washington State University since 1981, has been elected a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science in recognition for her contributions to the understanding of cellular protein secretion. Randall will receive the award at the Jan. 23 annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

North Idaho College will offer classes in Benewah County spring semester using interactive compressed video. Introduction to Allied Health and a related lab will be at St. Maries High School, while English Composition and Basic Mathematics will be at Lakeside High School. Classes begin the week of Jan. 11. Bonner County Sandpoint

The Bonner County 4-H Horse Judging team placed ninth in the overall competition at the National Arabian Youth Horse Judging Contest in October in Louisville, Ky. The team placed fourth in the performance classes, 10th in the oral reasons classes and 13th in the halter classes. Team members included Jamie Dockins, Alyce Rohrer, Sharon Joyce, Steve Joyce and Megan Hamilton.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Community Action Agency is taking applications for Idaho Energy Assistance. Applicants should call the agency to confirm income eligibility and schedule an appointment. Applicants must possess a current heating bill, proof of residential address, Social Security cards for all household members and documentation of the prior three months gross income for all household members. Latah County Moscow

The University of Idaho will provide bus service to south and southeastern Idaho for students during winter break. Service to Boise with stops in New Meadows, Payette and Weiser, will cost $60 round trip, and to Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls $90 round trip. Buses will leave Moscow at 5 p.m. Dec. 19 and return Jan. 10. Reservations can be made through the Office of Student Advisory Services on the UI campus in UCC 241. Shoshone County Osburn

Osburn Elementary students are selling raffle tickets to raise money for technology advancements in the school. The raffle prize is $100 worth of gasoline. Tickets are $1 each or $5 for a book of six.
