Ten years ago: Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev cut short his U.S. visit following a killer earthquake in Armenia.

Five years ago: President Clinton signed into U.S. law the North American Free Trade Agreement, which went into effect at the start of 1994.

One year ago: Federal hearings opened into the TWA Flight 800 disaster that had claimed 230 lives. In a $25 billion deal, Swiss Bank and Union Bank of Switzerland announced they would merge, forming Europe’s largest bank.
