Barnes’ 23 Leads G-Prep Over Ferris
GSL girls
Art Rojas likened Friday night’s Greater Spokane League girls basketball opener to climbing a mountain.
It was really more of a case of not being able to shut the Barnes door.
Carly Barnes scored 23 points and Juliann Laney had a solid all-around floor game as Gonzaga Prep outlasted Ferris 59-47 in overtime.
Barnes saved Prep with two late baskets in regulation, then scored seven points in an overtime blitz to finish with the highest single-game total by a Bullpup in coach Mike Arte’s 11 years.
“That was a really good game for me,” said Barnes, a standout distance runner. “Usually, the best way for me to help the team is defense.”
But it was offense on this night.
She had 10 points in the first quarter as the Pups scored the last 12 points for a 12-2 lead.
“It was awesome to hit that 3 (for a 5-2 lead) and go from there,” Barnes said. “I just got on a roll.”
The margin reached 21-8 at halftime and was 33-24 after three quarters as the Saxons whittled down what had been a 16-point deficit.
Ferris’ relentless pressure took its toll in the fourth quarter, and a 3-pointer from the left wing by Denise Kirstein tied the game at 37 with 3:22 to play.
After a Prep free throw, Kelly McCaffery drove the left baseline to put the Saxons up 39-38 with 2:01 to go.
Then Laney fed Barnes for back-to-back baskets and made a pair of foul shots. But the Saxons battled back, and Katie Foster’s 3-pointer from deep in the right corner with 5 seconds left forced overtime.
Barnes opened the extra session with a free throw. She followed that with a fast-break basket on a feed from Laney following a turnover and then stole the ball and went in for a layup. Ferris never recovered.
“You can’t spend all game climbing the mountain,” Rojas, the Ferris coach, said. “If you do that, you don’t have anything left when you get to the top.”
After Barnes started the OT outburst, freshman Katie Gillum and Barnes both scored off offensive rebounds following Bullpups misses at the foul line.
Laney struggled to get 11 points but had nine assists and four steals.
“Individually, it wasn’t the best game, but we had some players step up,” Laney said. “Carly will surprise you. She does some really amazing things. The whole point of being a team is being confident in your teammates. I don’t even remember the layups I missed. It doesn’t matter anymore.”
Ferris shot a miserable 18 of 63 and had 23 turnovers. Prep shot better - 20 of 46 - thanks to an 11-of-20 second half, but that was offset by 32 turnovers.
“When they came back, they rattled us,” Arte said. “They started being more aggressive on offense and started hitting 3s.”
Ferris has only two seniors and Prep one, and none scored in double figures.
“It took us a while to forget we were sophomores,” Rojas said. “(Prep) did a good job of weathering the storm.”
