Obituaries

George Nickell Spokane

Funeral for George C. Nickell, 86, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Lind (Wash.) United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Lind Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nickell, who was born in Connell, Wash., died Thursday.

He moved with his family to Lind in 1920 and graduated from Lind High School in 1930.

In 1935 he married Helen Hansen.

He was a barber and tavern operator and became an entrepreneur, owning many businesses throughout the years, including a pinball machine business during the early 1940s. He also built a motel in Lind in the 1950s and established an appliance sales and repair shop in Lind.

In 1955 he moved to Spokane where he worked as a Realtor and was a member of the Million Dollar Club, receiving recognition for setting sales records. He retired in 1976.

His wife died in 1988.

Mr. Nickell also spent time at his second home in Sun City, Ariz.

Survivors include his companion, Karolle Cavender; a son, Gary Nickell of Seattle; a sister, Leta Mae Longmeier of Lind; two granddaughters and three great-grandsons.

Geneva Bauer Colton, Wash.

Burial Mass for Geneva Elizabeth Bauer, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Gall’s Catholic Church in Colton. Burial will follow at the St. Gall Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bauer, who was born in Colton, died Friday.

She graduated from Colton High School and married Alex Bauer. They farmed the family farm near Colton until 1961, when they moved into Colton.

Mrs. Bauer was the co-owner of the Pastry Hut in Pullman for several years and later worked at The Small Place restaurant in Pullman until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Gall’s Parish, the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America and the Colton Grange.

Her husband died in 1962.

Survivors include a son, Jim Bauer of Uniontown, Wash.; three daughters, Carmen Welter and Jeanne Dahmen, both of Pullman, and Joy Dahmen of Deary, Idaho; two sisters, Mildred Kimball of Pullman and Monica Druffel of Moscow, Idaho; two brothers, Vince Meyer of Genesee, Idaho and Ray Meyer of Colton; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Madeline (Lennon) Morrison Tekoa, Wash.

Funeral for Madeline (Lennon) Morrison, 90, is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Tekoa United Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Farmington, Wash. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Morrison, who was born in Egypt, Wash., died Friday.

She graduated from Farmington High School in 1926 and attended Cheney Normal School, where she received her elementary school teaching certificate in 1930.

Mrs. Morrison returned to the family home south of Tekoa and taught at Andrew Springs country school for several years.

In 1937 she married W. Raymond Morrison, and they moved to Potlatch, Idaho, where they farmed for 15 years.

She also worked as a substitute teacher at the Potlatch School for several years and served as a member of the Potlatch School Board.

Mrs. Morrison was a volunteer 4-H leader in Benewah County Idaho for many years. She started the Liberty Butte Hustlers 4-H Club in Tensed, Idaho, in 1959, and continued to work with that club until 1994.

She received the Washington Water Power Outstanding Leadership Award for Benewah County in 1962 and the Idaho State Distinguished Service Award as a 4-H leader in 1984. Mrs. Morrison received her 40-year certificate as a 4-H leader in 1993.

She was a 70-year member of Hope Chapter 29 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Oakesdale, Wash., and a member of the Tekoa Study Club, Tensed Grange and the Methodist Church.

Her husband died last October.

She is survived by a son, Richard Morrison of Farmington.

Gottlieb ‘Ruddy’ Rudolph Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Gottlieb “Ruddy” Rudolph, 91, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rudolph, who was born in Kassel, Ukraine, died Friday.

He settled in North Dakota in 1910 and later moved to Montana before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1947.

Mr. Rudolph was a farmer and operated a dairy in the Coeur d’Alene area.

He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.

His wife, Emma, died in 1992.

Survivors include two sons, Art Rudolph of Spokane and Harold Rudolph of Clinton, Wash.; two daughters, Ellen Yager of Coeur d’Alene and Delores Iverson of Hayden, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Clementine Volesky Spokane

Funeral Mass for Clementine J. Volesky, 63, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Volesky, who was born in Dickinson, N.D., died Wednesday.

She moved to Spokane in 1950 and worked as a bookkeeper.

Mrs. Voleksy was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, George; two sons, Curtis and Brian Volesky, both of Spokane; a daughter, Lynn Paurus of Spokane; three brothers, Manual Dukart of Terry, Mont., John Dukart of Montana and Mike Dukart of Medford, Ore.; two sisters, Minnie Samek of Nine Mile Falls and Katie Armburst of Little Falls, Minn.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the American Cancer Society.

Carolyn Humphries Spokane

Funeral Mass for Carolyn Agnes Humphries, 62, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Humphries, who was born in Cottonwood, Idaho, died Thursday.

She married James Humphries Sr. in 1955, and they traveled throughout his military career.

In 1973 they moved to Spokane, where she held various positions with the City of Spokane for 18 years.

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Linda Moore and Virginia Keeney, both of Spokane, Donna Decker of Libby, Mont., and Nancy Gregory of Sandpoint; three sons, Edward, Ray and James Humphries Jr., all of Spokane; a brother, Delbert Nuxoll of Keuterville, Idaho; three sisters, Ramona Von Tersch, Christine Candler and Myrna Davis, all of Spokane; and numerous grandchildren.

Marion Hutchins Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Marion (Starr) Hutchins, 87, will be at 1 p.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport. Graveside service will follow at Newport Cemetery.

Mr. Hutchins, who was born in Hunters, Wash., died Thursday.

She married George Hutchins in 1942 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Hutchins was a 50-year member of the Pythian Sisters and was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Pend Oreille Historical Society, Friends of the Library, Newport Southern Baptist Church and the Newport United Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Georgene Bloomgren and Linda Reynolds, both of Newport; and a son, Curtis Hutchins, of Newport; a sister, Marguerite Cason of Clarkston, Wash.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions be made to the Newport Southern Baptist Building Fund.

Florence ‘Marie’ Bard Spokane

Visitation for Florence “Marie” Bard, 77, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Bard, who was born in The Dalles, Ore., died Tuesday.

A longtime Spokane resident, she was a homemaker.

Her husband, Herbert, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Phillip Bard of Sumner, Wash., Michael Bard of Coos Bay, Ore., Daniel Bard of Chicago; six daughters, Marsha Johnson of Spokane, Saundra Hutchins Wasilla, Alaska, Lois Prinzing-Bard of Chicago, Elaine Ediger of Salem, Ore., Linda Cockney of Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories and Diane Madison of Portland; a brother, Kenneth Monette of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Marguerite Fortine of Spokane and Naomi Richey of La Habra, Calif.; 38 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Ethel (Jack) Murphy Spokane

Visitation for Ethel O. (Jack) Murphy, 82, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Private burial will be at Peone Prairie Cemetery.

A lifetime Spokane County resident, Mrs. Murphy died Thursday.

She was born on Peone Prairie and graduated from Mead High School in 1933.

She married Ray Murphy in 1938, and they owned and operated Ra-Tels Radio and Television Sales and Service on Garland Avenue for many years.

Mrs. Murphy was a member of the Sandy Hill Garden Club, Deaconess Medical Center Auxiliary, the League of Women Voters, past president of the Willard Elementary School Parent Teacher Association and served many years on the election board.

Her husband died in 1966.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis Murphy of Spokane and Robbin Murphy of New York City; a brother, Cecil Jack, and a sister, Evelyn Johnson, both of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sandy Hill Garden Club or American Society Society.

MarGwen Martin Spokane

Mass of Christian burial for MarGwen M. Martin, 75, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Private burial will be at Loon Lake (Wash.) Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 50-year Spokane-area resident, Mrs. Martin died last Tuesday. She was born at Loon Lake.

She retired from teaching for the Central Valley School District and volunteered at Valley General Hospital for many years.

Mrs. Martin was a longtime member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Her husband, Philip, died in 1996.

She is survived by a brother, Evan Morgan of Lynchburg, Va.
