Obituaries

Larry Belote Mead

Memorial service for Larry D. Belote, 59, will be at 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Mr. Belote, who was born in Colon, Mich., died Saturday.

He enlisted in the Air Force, serving as a paratrooper from 1962 to 1966.

Mr. Belote later worked as an electrician, working for Westco Electric, Midland Electric and C.E.D. Electric, before becoming the owner and operator of Northwest Electric for several years.

He worked for Stoneway Electric for the past 18 years.

Mr. Belote was a member of the Deer Park Eagles Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a former longtime resident of Elk, moving to Mead a year ago.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Margaret; three sons, Jeff, Frank and Chris Belote, all of Spokane; a daughter, Amanda Belote of Spokane; three brothers, Dick, Bob and Harold Belote, all of Sturgis, Mich.; a sister, Iva Large of Sturgis; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Morning Star Boys Ranch or the American Diabetes Association.

Helen Jones Moscow, Idaho

Service for Helen Ann Jones, 86, will be at 10 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Moscow. Graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jones, who was born in North Dakota, died Friday.

She grew up in North Dakota and then lived in Newport, Wash., before moving to Spokane. Mrs. Jones moved to Moscow in 1952 and owned an Amoco Oil Distributorship, working as a bookkeeper and receptionist.

She retired in 1967 and was a member of the Moscow First Presbyterian Church and the church’s Elizabeth Circle.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel.

Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Jones of Moscow, Mary Vallat of Mercer Island, Wash., and Catherine McFarland of California; a sister, Pearl Hoel of Minnesota; and three grandchildren, Brent, Elizabeth and Geoffrey.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Moscow.

Mark Flaherty Spokane

Memorial Mass for Mark Flaherty, 45, will be at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 15-year Spokane resident, Mr. Flaherty died Saturday. He was born in Boston.

He was a social worker with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services and was past director of the Spokane AIDS Network.

Mr. Flaherty was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.

He was also a volunteer for Volunteers of America’s Crosswalk and was a Ham on Regal Player.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Mary; four children, Sean, Brian, Meghan and Shannon Flaherty ; his mother, Josephine Flaherty of Portland; three brothers, Ed, James and David Flaherty; and three sisters, Beth Vanzandt, and Diane and Eileen Flaherty.

Betty Hendrikson Post Falls

Visitation for Betty Lou Hendrikson, 70, will be from 9 a.m to 6 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home in Spokane. Funeral is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane.

Mrs. Hendrikson, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

She graduated from Rogers High School in 1945 and worked as a PBX operator at Sacred Heart Hospital.

In 1947 she married Lloyd Hendrikson and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Hendrikson was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Spokane, Gloria De Cristo Church in Yuma, Ariz. and Calvary Lutheran Church in Post Falls.

Mrs. Hendrikson moved to Post Falls from Spokane two years ago.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Kenneth Hendrikson, and a daughter, Kathleen Milne, both of Spokane; her father, John Westensee of Spokane; a brother, Denny Westensee, and a sister, Donna Johnson, both of Spokane; and seven grandchildren.

Kenneth Hinderer Colfax, Wash.

Funeral for Kenneth Stotts Hinderer, 76, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Burial will follow at Pullman Cemetery.

Mr. Hinderer, who was born in Waterville, Wash., died Thursday.

He graduated from Pullman High School in 1941 and began his career as a farmer.

In 1947 he married Dorothy Morton. He continued to farm until 1982, when they moved to Pullman. Mr. Hinderer worked in the maintenance department for the Palouse Empire Reality Co.

Mr. Hinderer moved to Colfax in 1995.

He was past president of the Whitman County Cattleman’s Association, past master and 50-year member of the Ewartsville Grange and a member of the 4-H Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Toby Hinderer, and a daughter, Loette Scharnhorst, both of Pullman; a brother, Blaine Hinderer of Pullman; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Dennis Cossel Spokane

Memorial service for Dennis Ellis Cossel, 42, will be at 1 p.m. today at Calvary Chapel. Burial was Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cossel, who was born in Caldwell, Idaho, died Friday from pancreatic cancer.

He graduated from Quincy (Wash.) High School in 1974 and received a degree in agricultural economics from Washington State University in 1981.

Mr. Cossell moved to Spokane in 1987 and worked for Farmers Home Administration for several years until 1991, when he began working as a project manager for the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

He was a Sunday pre-school teacher at Calvary Chapel.

Survivors include three brothers, David Cossel of Vancouver, Wash., Douglas and Donald Cossel, both of Newberg, Ore.; and a sister, Divonna Cossel of Salem, Ore.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission or the American Cancer Society, Spokane Chapter.

Andrew Mitzel Cheney

Visitation for Andrew P. Mitzel, 66, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cheney Funeral Chapel. Private burial will be held at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Mitzel, who died Saturday, was born in Napoleon, N.D.

He served in the Army for two years and in 1958 married Phyllis Wojcik.

Mr. Mitzel then worked as a civil service employee for the Army and Air Force for 33 years, retiring in 1987.

He was a previous resident of Bismarck, N.D., and Minot, N.D., moving to Cheney in 1973.

Mr. Mitzel was a member of the American Legion Post 72.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Andrew Mitzel of Silverlake, Wash.; four sisters, Eleanor Schwartzenberger of Minot, Elizabeth Haugland and Marveline Becker, both of Bismarck, and Diana Wangler of Fargo, N.D.; and a brother, Michael Mitzel of Indianapolis.

Hazel Coldsnow Clark Fork, Idaho

Memorial service for Hazel N. Coldsnow, 78, will be today at 2 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Mrs. Coldsnow, who was born in Clark Fork, died Friday.

She grew up and attended schools in Clark Fork. Mrs. Coldsnow was a homemaker.

Her husband, Stanley, died in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Dick Coldsnow of California and Bill Coldsnow of Sandpoint; a brother, Swan Nelson of Oregon; two sisters, Esther Carlson of Puyallup, Wash., and Mary Pierce of Spokane; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Sammy Clark Spokane

Funeral for Sammy A. Clark, 53, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Clark, who died Thursday, was born in Susanville, Calif.

He graduated from Mead High School, where he was a state wrestling champion.

Mr. Clark served as a sergeant in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and later worked in the lumber industry. He was also a rancher.

Survivors include his father, Winford Clark of Chattaroy; a brother, William Clark, and a sister, Margaret Meyer, both of Spokane.

Irene (Bow) Lowe Spokane

Visitation for Irene (Bow) Lowe, 99, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Burial will follow.

Mrs. Lowe, who was born in Burkesville, Ky., died Friday.

She moved to Texas at the age of nine and in 1912 moved to a farming area in Caldwell, Idaho.

Mrs. Lowe attended the University of Idaho, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in education.

She taught school in Bellevue, Idaho, and then married Ben Lowe. They moved to Harrison, Idaho, Otis Orchards, St. Maries, Mullan, Weiser and Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and in 1965 settled in Spokane.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a brother, John Bow; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Adele Jennings Chewelah, Wash.

Funeral for Adele M. “Dele” Jennings, 90, will be at 2 p.m. today at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah. Burial will be at Chewelah Memorial Park.

Mr. Jennings, who was born in Cedonia, Wash., died Thursday.

He was a lifetime resident of Stevens County and farmed in the Cedonia area until 1967.

From 1970 to 1984, Mr. Jennings worked for the National Forest Service.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Mary; a son, Richard Jennings of Issaquah, Wash.; three grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Atha Shriver Spokane

Funeral for Atha H. Shriver, 100, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Shriver, who was born in Missouri, died Thursday.

She moved to Spokane from Walla Walla in 1930 and built hand wheels for the Navy.

Mrs. Shriver later worked as a bookkeeper for The Crescent department store and for other companies.

She and her husband, Clarence Shriver, were owners and operators of Spokane Manufacturing Co.

Mrs. Shriver was a member of the Spokane Weaver’s Guild and the Ladies Oriental Shrine.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Tomlinson of Spokane; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

Albert Lafky Spokane

Memorial service for Albert F. Lafky, 81, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fourth Memorial Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lafky, who was born in Corvallis, Ore., died Dec. 10.

He served as an Army staff sergeant during World War II and moved to Spokane in 1946.

Mr. Lafky was an employee-owner of Boyle Fuel Co. for 23 years.

He was also an originator and producer of Starlit Stairway, a local television talent show, and an avid photographer.

Mr. Lafky was a member of the American Amateur Radio League and the Spokane Radio Club.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Elsie; two sons, Roger Lafky of Spokane and Alan Lafky of Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, Alene Lindstrand of Denver; and a brother Larry Lafky of Portland.

Mary Samuelson Spokane

Memorial service for Mary M. Samuelson, 95, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Davenport (Wash.) Seventh-day Adventist Church. Private family inurnment will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Harrington, Wash. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

A 28-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Samuelson died Saturday. She was born in Odessa, Wash.

She graduated from Walla Walla College and from the Glendale Sanitarium School of Nursing in 1928. She married Lambert Samuelson in 1930.

Mrs. Samuelson worked as a private duty nurse in Lincoln and Spokane counties for many years. She also did some custom sewing.

She had been a resident of Grandview, Wash., Olympia and Mount Vernon, Wash., before moving to Spokane.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a stepson, Cooper Kennett, and a stepdaughter, Bernice Crow, both of Spokane; a brother, Karl Schultz of Davenport; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Minnie Benedict Spokane

Memorial service for Minnie A. Benedict, 75, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

A 19-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Benedict died Sunday. She was born in Three Forks, Mont.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Cross Trailers Square Dance Club.

Her husband, Russell, died in 1996.

Survivors include two sons, Don Benedict of Henderson, Nev., and Boyd Benedict of Laurel, Mont.; two daughters, Charlotte Huet of North Bend, Wash., and Kathleen McDaniel of Cusick, Wash.; two brothers, Lawrence and Arnold White; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty Hale Spokane

Funeral for Betty Jo Hale, 73, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

A 60-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Hale died Saturday. She was born in Butte, Mont.

She graduated from Marycliff High School and worked in sales and bookkeeping for the Bernard Clothing Store for several years.

Survivors include her husband, John; three daughters, Lori Hale and Nancy Simioniw, both of Spokane, and Mary Hale of Puyallup, Wash.

William Barry Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for William T. Barry, 71, was Sunday at Cavanaughs River Inn.

Mr. Barry, a retired Gonzaga University professor, died Dec. 9.

He was born in Butte, Mont.

Mr. Barry graduated from Gonzaga University with a bachelor of science degree in chemical and sanitary engineering and later from the University of Montana with a bachelor of arts degree in biology.

Mr. Barry went on to receive his master’s degree in botany from the University of Montana Biology Station and a master’s degree in zoology from Arizona State University.

He received his doctorate in biology from the University of Montana and was a professor of biology and public health for 28 years at Gonzaga University and 12 years at Montana and Arizona state universities.

Mr. Barry was a research fellow at Colorado State University, the University of Michigan and the University of Louisville, Ky.

He has 97 publications and has presented his research nationally and internationally.

Mr. Barry received citations from the U.S. Government, many American universities, the U.S. Navy, Australia, Russia and Italy. He was also consulted by the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Forest Service, many private industries and the government of China, where he holds a Chinese domestic passport.

He also served as an expert witness in Federal, District and Superior courts.

After retiring from education, Mr. Barry was a consultant in Pend Oreille County, where he has lived for the past six years. He was also a member of the Watchdogs of Pend Oreille and served on the Pend Oreille County Library Board.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Margaret; three sons, Vince and Cole Barry, both of Spokane, and Greg Barry of the Tri-Cities; a daughter, Margaret Macy of Spokane; a brother, Vince Barry of Globe, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Bernice Smith Greenacres

Funeral for Bernice M. Smith, 92, was Monday at Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Burial followed at the cemetery.

Mrs. Smith, who was born in San Jose, Calif., died Friday.

She moved to Greenacres from central Montana in 1937. She was a homemaker and past member and president of the World War II Veterans Auxiliary for Washington state.

Mrs. Smith was also a member of the Priscilla Circle Ladies Fellowship at Spokane Valley United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Frank, died in 1963.

Survivors include four sons, Dennis Smith of Spokane, Emmett Smith of Cambridge, Idaho, Lynn Smith of Veradale and Neal Smith of Gifford, Wash.; a daughter, Mavis Baum of Fruitland, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
