Vikings Make Their Stand Guards Lead Cda, Deny Humphrey

Justin Rufus Correspondent

The perimeter players for the Coeur d’Alene High boys basketball team did just what was expected of them - they controlled the ball and maintained their patience.

Then, for good measure, they led the scoring.

The hot-shooting Vikings made 22 of 37 from the floor and netted 8 of 9 from the foul line to shut down Cheney 56-42 Tuesday night in a Border League game.

The victory in Viking Gym denied Blackhawks coach Denny Humphrey his 500th career win, dropping Cheney to 1-2 in league, 1-3 overall.

CdA guards Jeff and Jason Rupp owned the outside with brisk passing and patience for the open shot.

Jeff, a senior, scored 21 points, including three 3-pointers and 4-of-5 shooting from the foul line. Rupp was particularly dangerous from the baseline. Younger brother Jason, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, held his own with 16 points, helping CdA (1-3, 2-3) earn its first league victory.

“They’re (Blackhawks) really athletic,” said Jeff Rupp, whose quick hands earned four steals. “We weren’t going to press against a more-athletic team. We had to concentrate on the perimeter.”

Jason Rupp scored six points in the fourth with a basket and four free throws when Cheney had to foul.

“Jason Rupp did a great job leading the team,” Vikings coach Larry Bieber said. “(He has) a lot of savvy for a sophomore. He did a great job of distributing the ball and breaking the press down.”

The Viks struck hard when it counted most, ending the last 1:30 of the third quarter with a 9-0 run that helped them regain the momentum after Cheney had climbed to within one point at 33-32.

“I felt really good about our effort,” Bieber said. “We got the last shots off.”

Bieber said it was important that his players used their bodies to gain position for rebounding against the bigger Blackhawks. Senior Nathan Schmidt, a 6-foot wing led CdA on the boards with four, complementing his eight points.

“I told them to quit jumping,” Bieber said. “When we just jump, most teams are bigger and have the advantage.

Chris Bond led the struggling Blackhawks (18 of 53) with a team-high 14 points.

“We’re young and inexperienced,” Humphrey said. “We’re still trying to find guys to play. We only suited up eight tonight.”
