Five years ago: The Rev. Norman Vincent Peale, who had blended Christian and psychiatric principles into a message of “positive thinking,” died in Pawling, N.Y., at age 95.

One year ago: Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune died in suburban Tokyo at age 77.
