John Scrupps Odessa, Wash.
Memorial service for John W. Scrupps, 90, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heritage Church of Christ in Odessa, Wash. A private burial will follow at Odessa Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Odessa is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime resident of Odessa, Mr. Scrupps, died Tuesday.
He was a wheat farmer for several years, and was a former mayor and fire chief of Odessa.
He was a member of Heritage Church of Christ in Odessa and the City Council. He also served on the boards of the Odessa Union Warehouse, Odessa School District, Odessa Gun Club and the German American Insurance Co.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marie; two sons, Lorus and Jack Scrupps, both of Odessa; a brother, C. Hank Scrupps, and a sister, Sarah Walter, both of Odessa; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Lisa King Diamond Lake, Wash.
Funeral service for Lisa Michelle King, 22, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Graveside rites will follow at the Newport Cemetery.
Ms. King, who was born in Meyersdale, Pa., died Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle.
She graduated from Newport High School in 1995.
Ms. King had received numerous medals and awards as a participant in the Special Olympics and the Pend Oreille County Fair.
She was a member of the Southern Pend Oreille County Mental Health Group.
Survivors include her parents; Carl and Christine King of Diamond Lake; two brothers, Aaron King of Spokane and Alan King of North Carolina; two half-brothers, Jeffrey and Martin King, both of Austin, Texas; a half-sister, JoAnn Martin of Texas; and her grandparents, Wilhem and Maria Stettner of London.
Clyde Buechner Kellogg
No service will be held for Clyde F. Buechner, 77, at his request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Buechner, who was born in Prosser, Wash., died Wednesday.
He was a longtime Silver Valley resident and worked as a truck driver before retiring.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Sharon; two sons, Neal Buechner of Post Falls and Jory Buechner of Kellogg; a daughter, Jayne Buchner of Kellogg; seven brothers, Theadore Buechner of California, Robert Buechner of Sandpoint, Charlie Buechner of Oak Harbor, Wash., Ray M. Buechner of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Raymond B. Buechner of Missouri, Jim Buechner of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and John Buechner of Laclede, Idaho; two sisters, Katherine Goad of Coeur d’Alene and Hazel Wheeler of Oregon; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Edward Hunt Kellogg
Memorial service for Edward Allen Hunt, 48, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Mr. Hunt, who was born in Price, Utah, died Tuesday.
He was a sergeant in the Army during the Vietnam War and later worked at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.
Mr. Hunt lived in Burley, Idaho, and worked at a potato processing plant before taking medical retirement and settling in the Silver Valley in 1993.
He also worked at the Galena Mine.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Nancy; a daughter, April Walker of Kellogg; a son, Michael Lay of Colorado; his mother, Donna Hunt of Burley; a brother, Joe Hunt of Rupert, Idaho; three sisters, Ina Montoya of Heyburn, Idaho, Rose Dewitt of Minnesota and Colleen Bybee of California; and two grandsons.
Laurel ‘Lali’ Brock Coeur d’Alene
Private service for Laurel “Lali” Brock, 49, will be held at a later date. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Brock, who was born in La Habra, Calif., died Wednesday.
She grew up and graduated from high school in California and then worked for the family business manufacturing aircraft parts. She was a homemaker.
Before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1992, she had also worked as a waitress in California.
Survivors include a son, Adam Burger of Coeur d’Alene; three daughters, Heather Christensen of Coeur d’Alene, Tiffany Burger of Hayden, Idaho, and Alanna Sell of Post Falls; her parents, Jess and Ella Hegland of Coeur d’Alene; three sisters, Judy Grassel of Wenatchee, Wash., Barbara Jackson of California, and Wendy Keene of Coeur d’Alene; and three grandchildren.
Helen Bucknell Spokane
Memorial service for Helen Newcomb Bucknell, 98, will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 2 at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bucknell, who was born in Albany, N.Y., died on Nov. 20.
In 1914 she dropped out of school and began working as a nursing trainee. She served as a nurse during World War I. She later danced in chorus lines for touring vaudeville shows. In the 1930s, she began waiting tables in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
During World War II, she managed a restaurant in Berlin and later found a similar job in Chicago.
After moving to Spokane in 1966, she worked as a cook in a nursing home for many years.
She earned her high school diploma at the age of 92.
Her husband, Chester, preceded her in death.
Norman Venar Spokane
Graveside service for Norman E. Venar, 84, was held Thursday at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Venar died Tuesday.
In 1932 he graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, and owned and operated Norman E. Venar Insurance Agency for more than 36 years.
Mr. Venar was a member of Temple Beth Shalom and a volunteer for KSPS public television.
His wife, Rose, died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Andrea Pearlman of Foster City, Calif.; a sister, Frances Cooper of Portland; and three grandchildren.

William Cates Spokane
Memorial service for William E. “Bill” Cates, 70, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.
Mr. Cates, who was born in Glendale, Calif., died Tuesday.
A 17-year Spokane resident, Mr. Cates worked as a sales manager for an automotive equipment company.
He was a member of Spokane Valley Elks Lodge 2328 and the Spokane Yacht Club. He was past president of the Optimist Club and manager of the National Boat Show.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Lois; two sons, Gary Cates of Salem, Ore., and Rich Cates of Novato, Calif.; a brother, Richard Cates of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

Rev. Charles Billups Jr. Lewiston
Memorial service for Rev. Charles B. Billups Jr., 72, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Malcom’s Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in Lewiston.
Rev. Billups, who was born in Winchester, Idaho, died Tuesday from congestive heart failure.
He grew up and attended schools in Nezperce, Idaho, and then served with the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater aboard a troop transport ship.
Rev. Billups received the Purple Heart Award. He was medically discharged from the military and later moved to Lewiston.
He worked as a salesman at J.C. Penney Co. and attended the Bible Standard College in Eugene, Ore., graduating in 1953.
Rev. Billups later lived in Spokane until 1954 when he returned to Lewiston.
He ministered at the Brethren Church in Nezperce and later in Medical Lake and Colfax, Wash., Montana, Nebraska and Orofino, Idaho, before settling in North Dakota from 1989-98.
Rev. Billups retired and moved back to Lewiston earlier this year and had been active in the North Dakota Lions Club.
He was also a member of the Kiwanis and was a Little League Baseball coach in Medical Lake.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, LaQueta; two sons, Chris Billups of Colorado and Chuck Billups of Pullman; a brother, Ted Billups of Grangeville, Idaho; two sisters, Joyce Atkinson of Winchester and Diane Paluso of Grangeville; one grandson and one stepgranddaughter.

Darryl Brayton Spokane
Funeral service for Dr. Darryl M. Brayton, 73, was held Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery in Seattle. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 21-year Spokane resident, Dr. Brayton died Monday. He was born in Red Deer, Alberta.
He received his doctorate in 1963 from the University of Washington and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta. Dr. Brayton worked as a geologist for oil companies around the world. He retired from ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia in 1986.
He was a member of the Professional Geologist Association of Canada.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Betty; three sons, Darryl Brayton of Richland, and William and Loren Brayton, both of Seattle; four daughters, Linda Northcraft of Spokane; Sheree Brayton of Seattle, Darice Brayton of Portland and Kelley Brayton of Coos Bay, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Doris Dyson Spokane
No services will be held for Doris Ann Dyson, 59. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Doris, who was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday.
She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1961 and worked as a service representative for Northwest Bell Telephone Co. She later worked as a home economist for Northern States Power Co. and Pillsbury Co.
In 1968 she received her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and worked as a welfare social worker in Minneapolis.
After moving to Spokane in 1977, she was a volunteer with the Red Cross at Fairchild Air Force Base.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert Dyson of Counsel Bluffs, Iowa, and Lowell Dyson of Washington, D.C.; and a sister, Donna Austin of Superior, Mont.

Seung Jun Spokane
Funeral service for Seung U. Jun, 56, was held Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial followed at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mrs. Jun, who was born in South Korea, died Tuesday.
A 10-year Spokane resident, she was a homemaker and was a member of Spokane Hope Reformed Church.
Survivors include her husband, Bong; a son, Yoo Jun of Spokane; two daughters, Joo Sone and Yoo Jaynes, both of Spokane; and three grandchildren.
Geraldine Lickfold Rathdrum, Idaho
Viewing for Geraldine Ann Lickfold, 77, will be Monday from noon to 5 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Wash. Graveside service will follow at Meyers Falls Cemetery in Kettle Falls, Wash.
Mrs. Lickfold, who was born in Superior, Neb., died Tuesday.
She lived in Kettle Falls for many years and had owned Robertson’s Orchard and the Bulldog Restaurant. She also was a waitress at local restaurants.
Mrs. Lickfold moved to Rathdrum 13 years ago.
She was a member of the Kettle Falls American Legion Auxiliary and the Colville Eagles Aerie.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, James Robertson Jr. and Howard Lickfold.
Survivors include her companion, Hugo Bohl of Rathdrum; two sons, James Robertson of Kettle Falls and Garry Tate of Lewiston; two daughters, Patricia McPherson of Chewelah, Wash., and Linda Stocker of Rathdrum; a sister, Phyllis Rivers of Mississippi; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
R.G. ‘Jerry’ Hair Pahrump, Nev.
No service will be held for R.J. “Jerry” Hair, 73, at his request. The Neptune Society in Las Vegas is in charge of arrangements.
A 10-year Pahrump resident, Mr. Hair died Saturday.
Born in Spokane, he graduated from Central Valley High School in 1943 and served with the Navy during World War II.
Mr. Hair installed phone systems for Western Electric and in 1968 transferred to the company’s plant in San Jose, Calif. He retired in 1985 after 37 years with the company.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Telephone Pioneers.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Donna; two daughters, Cindy Fipp of San Diego and Karen McKnight of Riverbank, Calif.; a son, Gary Hair of Eugene, Ore.; two brothers, Gene Hair of Opportunity and Warren Hair of Eagle, Idaho; a sister, Celia Tesch of Opportunity; and three grandchildren.
Melvena Swensrud Spokane
Memorial service for Melvena R. Swensrud, 88, will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Gretna Green Chapel. Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Swensrud, who was born on the White Earth Reservation in Montana, died Monday.
She moved to Spokane in 1960 and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Kerner; a daughter, Barbara Fullmer of Spokane; a sister, Lena Desizlets of Minnesota; 14 grandchildren, numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
