The good news for area winter sports enthusiasts, who have been house-bound by single-digit temperatures and seen their favorite resorts without a major snowfall recently, is that temperatures are creeping up and snow is here.

Many area ski destinations are offering discounted and free skiing today:

Whitewater is giving reduced rates and Red Mountain has free skiing today from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

All skiiers can get $2 off any lift ticket for Silver Mountain by picking up a coupon at all local Rosauers grocery stores.

Schweitzer Mountain will open its tubing hills Saturday.

Also Saturday, Mount Spokane will begin night skiing and all five chairs will be in operation at that time.

Nordic skiing

Looking for family fun on New Year’s Eve? Farragut State Park in Idaho is offering “Hike or Ski with the Park Rangers” Dec. 31 from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. starting at the park headquarters. A $4-per-person pre-registration fee is required and can be sent to Farragut State Park, 13400 E. Ranger Road, Athol, Idaho 83801. For further info, call (208) 683-2425, ex. 27.
