Bears Seize Control In Gsl Fouls Spoil Good Matchup With Tigers
The few times Central Valley and Lewis and Clark actually played basketball Tuesday night they looked like the co-leaders of the Greater Spokane League boys race.
Unfortunately, the players spent more time standing around waiting for foul shots or sitting on the bench in foul trouble.
That was a shame, because the showdown at CV featured some tremendous flashes of brilliance before the fourth-ranked Bears pulled away for a 70-52 win that gave them sole possession of the lead with five games remaining.
“I think what you saw was two teams with good athletes,” CV coach Rick Sloan said.
“When you get a matchup like that, you’re going to have a good game.”
That was especially true in the first half when CV raced to a 19-4 lead and LC battled back within two before the Bears surged to a 34-22 advantage at halftime.
“Basketball is a game of runs,” Sloan said. “Anytime you have great athletes, and Terry (Reed, the LC coach) does a good job of coaching, you expect them to come back.”
The Bears (12-2 overall, 11-2 GSL) only allowed one field goal in the first quarter, taking a 19-7 lead. They opened a 19-4 lead despite leading scorer Tom Perkes picking up his second personal foul and a technical before the midway point.
The Tigers (11-4, 10-3) clawed back because CV couldn’t take advantage from the foul line and LC’s vaunted man-to-man defense stiffened. When sophomore Jonathan Hook knocked down consecutive 3-pointers, the CV lead was 22-20 midway through the quarter.
“If we would have made some of our close shots,” Reed said. “We had the ball in the key but we didn’t finish early. That put us behind. At the time we were trying to come back, we were also in foul trouble and we couldn’t (substitute for tired players). Whistles were blowing all night.”
Both teams were shooting two-shot free throws because each had 10 fouls with more than 5 minutes remaining.
The Bears regained control with a 10-2 run, using their rugged man defense to force turnovers - LC had 15 turnovers at the half - and getting a couple easy baskets off of offensive rebounds.
The fouls continued to pile up in the second half, CV had to go to a zone and the lead never got below 10 until late in the third quarter.
CV junior Jake Hebden closed the third quarter with a 3-pointer to make it 50-35, and when Hook opened the fourth with a 3 for LC, Hebden hit another. Both finished with four treys, Hebden had 15 points, Hook 14.
“I passed to Patrick (Libey), and if it’s not there he kicks it back out,” said Hebden. “It’s the in-and-out game. I’m better as a set shooter.
… We just didn’t have that killer instinct we usually have. They’re scrappy, good guys.”
