Ciccarelli Is Ninth To Reach 900 Goals

Associated Press

(From Replay, February 5, 1998): Dino Ciccarelli scored his 600th goal in the National Hockey League Tuesday night. A headline in Wednesday’s editions was incorrect.

Dino Ciccarelli scored his 600th career goal with 5:09 left in regulation as the Florida Panthers tied the Detroit Red Wings 1-1 Tuesday night in Miami.

Ciccarelli became the ninth player in NHL history to reach the 600-goal plateau, and he did it against his former club.

At Calgary, Los Angeles Kings center Jozef Stumpel scored three times and set up the go-ahead goal in a 6-3 victory over the Calgary Flames.

At Phoenix, Tony Amonte had two goals and an assist to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-2 victory over Phoenix.

Back from rehab

Fifteen minutes after most of his New Jersey Devils teammates left the ice, Ken Daneyko worked with assistant coach Robbie Ftorek on drills normally used in the opening days of training camp.

It was repetitious and tiring, but Daneyko was enjoying himself.

After three months of rehabilitation for admitted “binge drinking,” even the dregs of a practice were fun for Daneyko, who worked out with the team for the first time since putting himself into the NHL-sponsored substance abuse program on Nov. 1.

“I feel rejuvenated. I feel fresh,” a sweaty Daneyko said after skating for about 40 minutes at South Mountain Arena.

Suter suspended

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Gary Suter was suspended for four games without pay and fined $1,000 by the NHL for cross-checking Anaheim forward Paul Kariya in a Feb. 1 game.

Kariya suffered a concussion as a result of the hit and hasn’t played or practiced since.

GMs decide little

What was scheduled as a morning meeting stretched into a 7-hour session in Scottsdale, Ariz., as NHL general managers grappled with ways to make hockey appeal to a wider audience.

Proposed rule changes turned out to be the sticking point. Many GMs believe the game needs only fine-tuning, without adopting headline-grabbing moves such as dividing a game into quarters ala football and basketball.

That proposal was tabled in one of the day’s few concrete developments.

“It was never alive,” commissioner Gary Bettman. “The IHL is testing the idea, like it is testing a whole host of things. We’re interested to see all of their efforts to speed up the game, but nothing is needed that is too radical. This game doesn’t need radical solutions.”

The meeting will end today. Delegates cannot implement changes, but they can recommend them to the board of governors.
