Defense Keys G-Prep’s Victory Over Nc

GSL boys

It’s not often a player can score eight points, give up 24, foul out and still have a good game.

Jeff Dixson was the exception.

The 5-foot-9 Gonzaga Prep senior set the tone as the Bullpups rolled to a 68-57 win at North Central in a key Greater Spokane League boys basketball game Thursday night.

“I didn’t feel like I did as good of a job as I could,” Dixson said. “The rest of the team took care of it.”

Dixson had the job of guarding NC’s Chris Allen, the GSL’s leading scorer. Allen had 24 points but only one in the first quarter when Prep scored the first 11 points and led 15-1.

The Indians never recovered in the battle between the two teams tied for the final playoff spot.

“We knew we had to focus on (Allen and Chris Blotsky),” Dixson said. “Coach freed us up so we didn’t have to help so we could concentrate on limiting their touches.”

Dixson got the Bullpups on the board by penetrating NC’s zone and hitting a short jumper. He added a 3-pointer in the opening 11-0 run. Shane Hartnett had eight of his 10 in the first quarter.

The Indians (7-9 overall, 7-7 GSL) missed their first 13 shots, but even when they found the range, Prep (8-8, 8-6) never slowed down in winning its fifth straight game.

“The big thing is we continually improved all year,” Prep coach Mike Haugen said. “Even when we were losing, the games were getting closer and closer.”

“We struggled the last three or four games shooting,” NC coach Jay Webber said. “We let it affect everything tonight… . A lot of it is confidence.”
