‘Great Expectations’ Sets Dickens In Florida

It’s not pure Charles Dickens, but Alfonso Cuaron’s adaptation of the English writer’s classic novel “Great Expectations” works well as a magically realistic variation. Cuaron, whose previous film was the beautifully shot “The Little Princess,” transports Dickens’ tale to the bright beaches of today’s South Florida. And, surprise, surprise, it works, even to the casting of Robert De Niro as a mysterious man who realizes a young boy’s dreams. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Photo
