Davenport Derails The Hingis Express
Lindsay Davenport beat Australian Open champion Martina Hingis 6-3, 6-3 today to win the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, improving to 4-5 lifetime against the teen star.
Davenport served well and attacked on Hingis’ second serve, breaking for a 4-3 lead and again in the ninth game in the first set.
Hingis, occasionally coughing and sniffing, said her week-old cold was no trouble. “She just played really good today.”
Davenport, 21, said, “There are not many days when you feel like you play great. Today I thought I played great.”
Croatia’s Goran Ivanisevic, seeking his third straight Croatian Indoor title, defeated Martin Sinner of Germany 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in Split, Croatia, to advance into the final of the ATP Tour event.
He will meet top-seeded Greg Rusedski of Britain, who lost to Ivanisevic in last year’s final. Rusedski beat Marc Rosset of Switzerland 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
In Marseille, France, top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia will face Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist in today’s final of the ATP Marseille Indoors after both won their semifinal matches.
Kafelnikov downed Sweden’s Mikazel Tillstrom 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 and the sixth-seeded Enqvist upset No. 2 Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-3. 6-7 (1-7), 6-3.
