Boy Scouts Receiving Eagle Scout Status

Six high school students will be recognized at a ceremony Friday night as they’re awarded Eagle Scout status. The award is the highest offered among the ranks of Boy Scouts.

Benjamin Dinsmore, 15; Reed Fessel, 14; Chase McCarthy, 14; Wesley O’Dell, 13; Nicolas Zambryski, 16; and Jared Stanton, 15, will be presented as Eagle Scouts at 7 p.m. at the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center.

They are all members of the Boy Scout Troop 19 Inland Northwest Council. Dinsmore, Fessel, O’Dell, Zambryski and Stanton all attend Lakeside High School; McCarthy attends Gonzaga Prep.

All the boys are expert campers, with five of them having spent at least 10 nights in a high adventure remote wilderness campout setting. All have spent over 30 nights in all kinds of summer and winter campout conditions.

The boys have all planned and completed service projects to their community. Here is a list of some of their accomplishments.

Dinsmore: Built 32 feet of athletic seating at Lake Spokane Elementary.

Fessel: Built 10 birdhouses and placed them around the Nine Mile Falls School District.

Stanton: Built and erected safety signs in Suncrest’s equestrian right of way.

McCarthy: Built a log barrier in Suncrest Park to protect a designated swim area from boaters.

O’Dell: Built and placed 10 terrariums in the Nine Mile Falls elementary schools.

Zambryski: Built and erected 12 cement benches and six tables at Lakeside High School to ease the overcrowding by giving students a place to sit outside.

Only one of every 100 Boy Scouts eventually becomes an Eagle Scout. Of America’s first 29 astronauts into orbit, 26 were Eagle Scouts.

Support center opens NC branch

Libby Support Center Coordinator Rick Jordan announced the opening of a second homework support center. This one is in the library at North Central High School.

Jordan, coordinator of both homework centers, said the NC homework center will be open to all K-12 students Monday through Friday, from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m., and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

As is the case at Libby, the North Central Homework Support Center is staffed by school administrative interns, teachers and volunteer students.

Students need to bring their homework and books. Parents and guardians are invited and encouraged to accompany their students.

Both centers are equipped with Macintosh and Gateway computers, Internet access and online tutoring to help students complete their school research projects and papers.

The phone number of NC’s Center is 353-3740. If you’re calling during the center’s off-hours, dial 353-4462.
