First-round co-leader John Huston takes a two-stroke lead into today’s third round of the Hawaiian Open in Honolulu.

Huston, who opened the tournament with a 9-under-par 63, followed with a 65 on Friday to reach the midway mark at 16-under 128, matching the 36-hole record set by Davis Love III in 1994. Huston sealed his 65 with birdies on the final two holes.

Skip Kendall sits two shots back after a career-best 63 for a 130, with Tom Watson, who regained his putting touch in posting a 64, staying close at 13-under 131.

Senior GTE Classic

Brian Barnes of Scotland shot an 8-under-par 63 for a record-setting first round in Lutz, Fla.

Barnes, seeking his first Senior PGA Tour victory, was three strokes ahead of Jim Colbert, Bob Duval and Bob Eastwood, who were tied at 5-under 66.

Barnes’ performance was two shots off Rocky Thompson’s 18-hole tournament record of 61 set during the third round in 1994.

In Glendale, Calif., Hiromi Kobayashi of Japan birdied six of her first eight holes in shooting a 5-under-par 67 for a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the three-day LPGA event.

Tied for second place at 70 were four players in search of their first LPGA victory - Australian Wendy Doolan, Alicia Dibos, Karen Weiss and qualifier Janice Moodie - along with veteran Elaine Crosby.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot a 1-over 73.
