Former University of Montana football coach Don Read will not stay on as quarterbacks coach at Northern Arizona, the school has announced.

“Read suffers from asthma and the high elevation of Flagstaff was causing him health problems,” an NAU press release said.

Former UM defensive coordinator Jerome Souers, the new Northern Arizona coach, announced Read’s hiring on Jan. 12.

Read, 64, coached the Grizzlies for 10 years, retiring in April 1996, after leading Montana to the 1995 NCAA Division I-AA championship.
