Gardner Shaw Pullman

Memorial service for C. Gardner Shaw, Ph.D., a retired Washington State University professor, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman. Private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Pullman City Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Shaw, who was born in Springfield, Mass., died Thursday. He was 80.

Following graduation from high school he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan.

He received his Masters of Science degree from Penn State and in 1947 received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.

In 1940 he married EstherAnne Tennant.

Dr. Shaw served in the Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific Theater, including Okinawa and the Guadalcanal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. He also served in the Marine Corps Reserves for a period of time, and while in Pullman was the Liaison Officer for the Marine Corps at Washington State University for several years.

He joined the faculty at Washington State University in 1947, and became Chairman of the Department of Plant Pathology in 1961 and served through 1972. He retired in 1983.

Dr. Shaw was a well-known teacher and researcher in mycology and forest pathology, and was the world’s authority on downy mildew fungi. He was a force behind the Washington State University Mycological Herbarium and was an advisor of many graduate students.

He authored more than 130 scientific chapters and was twice chief of party for USAID-WSU with the Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture. During his involvement with AID he and his wife had assignments in India, Pakistan, Jordan, New Zealand and Thailand.

Dr. Shaw was a member of Delta Tau Delta and served as chapter advisor for more than 20 years at Washington State University. He was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Betta Kappa.

He helped start the Pullman Stamp Club in 1948, and was active as a Boy Scout and Explorer Scout leader for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Terry Shaw of Juneau, Alaska, and Mark Shaw of Kent, Wash.; a daughter, Sherry Taber of Auke Bay, Alaska; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Inland Northwest Chapter.

Hazel Hughes Almira, Wash.

Memorial service for Hazel G. Hughes, 94, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Almira Community Church. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hughes, who was born in Watervliet, Mich., died Wednesday.

She graduated in 1922 from Almira High School.

Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker, and a member of the Big Bend Historical Society, Order of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by three husbands, Christian Neilson, Hugh Thomson and Glyn Hughes.

Survivors include a son, Leo Neilsen of Spokane; four grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Almira Cemetery Endowment Care Fund or the Big Bend Historical Society in Wilbur.

Marie Godfrey Spokane

Memorial service for Marie A. Godfrey, 95, will be held at a later date. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Godfrey, a 71-year Spokane resident, died Thursday.

She was born in Divide, Ore., and worked as a beautician for several years at Western Hair Company in Spokane.

Her husband, Benjamin Godfrey, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a grandson, three great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Pearl Donery Spokane

Visitation for Pearl N. Donery, 85, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Donery, who was born in Colfax, Wash., died Thursday.

She graduated from Colfax High School, and in 1937 married Les Donely in Colfax.

They moved to Spokane in 1952, and she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Donery was a member of Manito United Methodist Church.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Timothy Donery of Seattle; one brother, Vernon Hilty, and a sister, Fern Branum, both of Colfax; and three grandchildren.

Jeanne Fredricks Spokane

Memorial service for Jeanne Fredricks, 70, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Fredricks, who was born in Portland, died Thursday.

She raised and showed horses, and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Fredricks was a 17-year resident of Spokane.

Survivors include two sons, Rick and Mike Webber; a daughter, Chris Webber King; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association.

Frances Davis Deer Park

Service for Frances L. Davis, 85, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Deer Park Community Church. Burial will follow at the Elk Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Davis, who was born in Moline, Mich., died Thursday.

She graduated from high school in Moline and moved to Chattaroy in 1984 from El Cajon, Calif.

Mrs. Davis spent nine years in Chattaroy and the last five years in Deer Park.

She was a homemaker, and a member of the Deer Park Community Church.

Her husband of 44 years, Luther Davis, died in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Jim Davis of Deer Park; a sister, Dorothy Brown of Moline; three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Lorayne Detwiler Spokane

No service will be held for Lorayne Detwiler, 72, at her request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Detwiler, who was born in Fargo, N.D., died Monday.

She was a homemaker and a 25-year resident of Spokane.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Paul; four daughters, Dana McKenna of Spokane, Debbie Jo Keck and Susan Kirk, both of Seattle and Cindy Lou Patton of Bremerton; two brothers, Stanley Grove of Seattle and Reuben Grove of North Dakota; three sisters, Merle Scott, Frances Heaton and Eleanor Johnson, all of Seattle; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
