WSU Prevails In A Wild One

The Washington State Cougars needed most of their 17 runs and a 3-for-6 day from Jason Grove to hold off a late-inning rally by Arizona State to secure a 17-12 upset win Sunday afternoon in front of 1,419 fans at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

Starter Todd Meldahl (1-0) of Washington State (3-3) was in command early against ASU (10-3), striking out seven and allowing only three earned runs in six innings on the mound. Grove led the Cougars at the plate, falling just a home run short of hitting for the cycle. The freshman right fielder pushed across five WSU runs, and scored two more.

Washington State travels to Pasco to take on Gonzaga in a three-game series starting Friday.

Men’s college basketball

Community Colleges of Spokane (11-14, 3-7) gave up a six-point lead in 40 seconds at the end of regulation, but came back in overtime to defeat visiting Walla Walla Community College (14-12, 4-7) 110-101 Saturday.

Cedrick Day and Jon Chatfield scored six points each in the overtime. Brad Nicholson of WWCC hit two 3-pointers at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.

Hockey

Ryan Johnson and Keith Tobiason had two assists apiece Sunday as Spokane beat Beaver Valley 5-2 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game in the Ice-A-Rena.

Soccer

The Spokane Falcons beat FC United 7-1 in the Washington State Snickers Championship Cup (U-19) at Albi Stadium.

Garth Cummings had three goals, Billy Sleeth two and Abbas Faridnia one goal and three assists to lead the Falcons. Spokane advances to the semifinals March 1 in Seattle.

Track and field

Washington State’s Ian Waltz threw a personal best 63 feet, 3-3/4 inches Saturday at the Colorado Springs Sprint Classic.

Gymnastics

Lakeside High School finished fifth among 13 teams at the Class 3A/2A district championships at Shorewood High School Saturday. The Eagles, in their first year of competition, scored 146.15 points.
