Gambill Victorious

Jan-Michael Gambill of Colbert, who moved up to a career-high 167th on the world computer rankings from No. 204, defeated Australia’s Sandon Stolle 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 in the first round of the Kroger St. Jude tennis tournament.

Gambill, who had 15 aces and only two double faults in beating the son of Aussie legend Fred Stolle, broke Stolle in the 10th game of the third set to win. Gambill lost only one service game.

Gambill, who received a wild card entry into the tournament, plays 14th seeded Byron Black of Zimbabwe today.
