Defending B Champs Knock Off No. 2 Curlew

Panorama Tournament

Don’t question the defending boys State B champions, even when every factor points in that direction.

Danny Hanks hit 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter, including the first of two with 4 seconds left, as Republic (18-5), last year’s state champ, shocked second-ranked Curlew 56-55 at Colville to defend its Panorama League Tournament title.

Curlew (19-4) led 42-30 with 9 minutes to go but couldn’t hold on against a team it had defeated 62-30 two weeks ago. The Cougars’ Jeremy Groth, the league’s second-leading scorer at 23.3 points per game, didn’t score. Curlew’s three previous losses were on forfeits, for using an ineligible player during league routs.

Curlew’s biggest blow in this one came with 3 minutes left in the game, when Seth Cribby was whistled for a foul and drew a technical. The Tigers hit 3 of 4 free throws and Hanks added a basket for a five-point swing.

Republic opens District 7 tournament play at 7:45 Tuesday night at Spokane Falls Community College against Odessa (15-8). Curlew opens at 6 at Spokane Community College against Almira/Coulee-Hartline (15-9).
