Ridden by Jerry Bailey, Lil’s Lad took the lead on the first turn and held off the challenge of Coronado’s Quest for a 2-length victory in the $200,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream in Hallandale, Fla.

With the win, Lil’s Lad established himself as one of the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby on May 2 as the 3-year-old son of Pine Bluff made it 3-for-3 this year.

Matt Kenseth bumped aside Tony Stewart on the final turn of the race and drove to a victory in the Goodwrench 200 in Rockingham, N.C..

The win was the first for the 25-year-old Chevrolet driver in only his 24th NASCAR Busch Series start. The move by Kenseth robbed 26-year-old Stewart, the defending Indy Racing League champion, of what would have been his first win in 16 Busch appearances.

Dale Jarrett, hampered by an engine problem in the opening round of time trials, led qualifying for today’s Goodwrench 400 at North Carolina Speedway. Chad Little of Spokane qualified 42nd as a provisional starter.

Pete Weber rolled nine strikes in a row for a 277-236 win over Hall of Famer David Ozio in the title match of the Professional Bowlers Association’s national championship in Toledo, Ohio.
