Meldahl, Stevenson Lead WSU
Washington State University pitching ace Todd Meldahl pitched six strong innings and leadoff hitter Shawn Stevenson extended his school-record hitting streak Sunday as the Cougars thumped Gonzaga 9-2 at Posse Stadium.
Meldahl (2-1) allowed only one run and struck out five in his stint, helping WSU (5-4) win the rubber game of the best-of-3 series.
Meldahl surrendered only one hit in the first five innings. Then, after giving up a run in the sixth, he ended the inning by starting a home-to-first base double play with the bases full.
Stevenson hit safely in his 27th consecutive game, contributing a single and a double. The top five hitters in the lineup went 10 for 19 for the game.
First baseman Casey Kelley, batting fifth, broke out of a slump by belting his fourth home run of the season. His two-run shot in the seventh inning to make the score 7-1.
