Urich Will Play ‘Love Boat’ Captain

Philadelphia Inquirer

Robert Urich (“Spencer: For Hire”) will play skipper Jim Kennedy of Princess Cruise Lines’ Sun Princess when it sets sail on UPN’s “The Love Boat: The Next Wave” (KSKN Spokane Channel 22).

Aaron Spelling (who else?) will produce “Wave,” an updated version of his hit ABC series that ran from 1977 to ‘86 and provided employment for innumerable guest stars on Social Security. “Wave” begins a six-week cruise April 13 in the 8-to-9 p.m. slot.

Urich, 50, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 1996 that forced TNT to cancel his series, “The Lazarus Man.” He surfaced last February on ABC’s “Vital Signs.”

In “Wave,” Urich’s Capt. Kennedy is a divorced Navy commander who decides to work a cruise ship instead of re-up with Uncle Sam. Kyle Howard plays his troubled 15-year-old son. Other co-stars include Corey Parker as the ship’s doctor, Stacey Travis as cruise director, Phil Morris as chief purser, Randy Vasquez as bar manager, and Joan Severance as chief of security.
