Border Schools Earn Split Wv Boys Out; Cheney Girls Win, Advance

Washington Border League teams broke even with Mid-Valley foes in first-round loser-out 3A regional basketball games at Eastern Washington University’s Reese Court.

West Valley’s boys had their season come to an end with a 68-47 drubbing by West Valley-Yakima.

Earlier, Cheney beat Eastmont 61-53 in girls competition.

Cheney’s girls play West Valley-Yakima (21-0) Friday, 4 p.m. at Central Valley High School. District 7 champion East Valley (10-12) faces Ellensburg (14-7), a 61-34 winner over Selah, at 7:45.

In boys games Friday, WV-Yakima plays Hanford at 5:45 and District 7 champion Cheney plays Moses Lake in the 9:15 nightcap. The Chiefs (18-5) advanced by defeating Sunnyside 73-62.

The Eagles drew a tough opponent in the Rams (20-3), who had gone undefeated in the Mid-Valley League but were upset by Sunnyside in a playoff game.

Trailing 25-22 midway through the second quarter, WV-Spokane (13-11) committed a turnover that led to a chain of events enabling WV-Yakima to build a 38-24 halftime lead.

Eagle foibles included turnovers, forced shots, soft defense, lack of rebounding and missed free throws.

“We were playing pretty well and were where we wanted to be, and then lost track of their shooters,” said Eagle coach Joe Feist.

The Rams lead grew to as much as 26 points, including a run of 12 in a row for a 54-31 lead over the last 5 minutes of the third quarter.

WV-Yakima hit 57 percent from the field, with numerous easy baskets, and had a 44-23 rebounding advantage. Chad Chronister and Byron Borton led the scoring with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

“I was pleased with our season, but not with our effort tonight,” said Feist.

Suffocating full-court pressure and long-range shooting gave Cheney’s girls a 16-point first-half lead.

The Blackhawks then withstood the taller Wildcats’ rally to advance against Eastmont.

Trailing 10-8, Cheney (18-6) went on a 23-4 run, forcing turnovers with its defense and getting 3-point baskets from Kara Weitman and Anna Getz to build the big lead.

“We knew we had to be aggressive early before they figured out our press,” said Blackhawks coach Marty Jessett. “And we hit enough outside jumpers to stay ahead, spread the court and penetrate.”

Getz scored 21 points and Weitman 20, combining for eight 3-point baskets.

Eastmont (15-8) rallied to within six points in the third quarter.

Eastmont’s 6-foot junior post Natalie Jarrett did much of the damage and finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

But Weitman got Cheney back up 13 early in the fourth quarter and made an inbounds layin for a 59-50 lead to seal the win with 1:09 to go.
