Danger From Concussion Ends Humphries’ Career

Compiled From Wire Services

Afraid of what the next concussion might do to him, a tearful quarterback Stan Humphries bid farewell Friday to the San Diego Chargers.

Humphries, the only quarterback to take the Chargers to a Super Bowl, retired four months after suffering the most serious of his six concussions over a 10-year career.

“I’ve had a lot of great times playing football, but I think football is in my past and I think my future is with my family,” Humphries said at a news conference, his parents sitting on one side of him and his wife, Connie, and two young daughters on the other.

“For me to make sure that I have a future with my family, today I have decided to retire from the San Diego Chargers and the National Football League,” Humphries said, breaking down.
