G-Prep Students Excel At College Placement Exams

Two 1997 graduates of Gonzaga Prep received Advanced Placement Scholars with Honor Awards, while seven other students earned Advanced Placement Scholar Awards.

About 10 percent of America’s graduating seniors have taken one or more AP exams. Only 13 percent of the 581,000 students who tested last May performed at a sufficient level to merit such recognition.

G-Prep’s Kara Laney of Sprague, Wash., and Steve Schreiner of Spokane earned the honor awards with at least a 3.23 average exam grade on four or more AP tests.

G-Prep students receiving grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams were: Joe Jordan, Newman Lake; Bryan King, Jennifer Murphy, Tom Pearson, Bronwyn Tritt, Julie Weiskoff, all of Spokane, and Tyrel Newbill, Otis Orchards.

Daniel and Tiffany Meyers, both graduates of Gonzaga Prep and children of Roger and Linda Meyers, were chosen as tutors for a semester at the Whitman College’s Writing Center.

Whitman students who have completed at least two years of academic work are selected through writing samples and faculty recommendations.

Marine Sgt. Kirk Bray, a 1993 graduate of West Valley High School, was promoted to his present rank while serving with the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

He is a son of Mike and Glenda Bray.

Sasha Jordan, a 1995 graduate of West Valley High School, has received a $900 Bea Fry Memorial Scholarship from the Murrow School of Communications at Washington State University.

Jordan is a member of Phi Eta Sigma national honor society, belonged to College Democrats and was a special reporter for Cable 8 News.

Acina Brandom, a 1994 graduate of West Valley High School, received a $2,000 Indian Education Program Scholarship to attend Eastern Washington University, where she is a sophomore.

While a student at Spokane Community College, Brandom was on the honor roll.

She is the daughter of Cliff and Elizabeth Van Etten, Wellpinit, Wash.

Two Spokane students, Adam Benham, 13, and Tyann Prentice, 16, received Honor Awards from Skipping Stones Magazine.

The multicultural magazine published in Eugene, Ore., invited authors of all ages to tell how they are making a difference in their lives, families and schools.

Writers and artists from six countries received awards.

David Herzog, a 1993 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, graduated summa cum laude last spring from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Herzog received the Academic Vice President’s Award for Excellence, the Blenkiron English Award as the outstanding English scholar, and the Father Robert Graham S.J. Alumni Award for leadership and service.

He is now studying at the University of Glascow, Scotland, on a $22,000 Rotary scholarship.

He is the son of Mike and Jean Herzog, Spokane.

Cadet Benjamin Williams received the Gold Wreath Award from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., for excelling in the academy’s academic, military and physical programs.

Williams, a 1995 graduate of Central Valley High School, is the son of George Williams, Spokane, and Barbara Sovde, Edgewood, Wash.

Air Force Senior Airman Randy Slater has been stationed at Incirlik Air Base in Adana, Turkey, as a security force member with the 39th Security Forces Squadron.

Slater, son of Sue and Larry Smith of Spokane, is a 1994 graduate of North Central High School.

Donald Orlich, a science professor at Washington State University and a graduate of The University of Montana, was recently elected to the UM’s Foundation Board of Trustees.

Sherman Womer, Keller, Wash., and Toni Stanger, Coulee Dam, were selected to represent the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation for a year as Mr. and Miss Colville Tribes.

Womer is a senior at Wilbur (Wash.) High School, where he is a member of the football team. He plans to attend college next fall.

Stanger, a senior at Lake Roosevelt High School, Coulee Dam, plans to major in education in college and teach on the Colville Reservation.

Five Inland Northwest residents recently graduated from military schools:

Wayne Wilson, son of Wayne and Kerry Wilson, Spokane, was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force upon graduation from officer training school at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala.

Wilson is a 1991 graduate of Deer Park High School and a 1996 graduate of Whitworth College.

Airman 1st Class Christopher Hinker graduated from Phase I of the medical laboratory apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Hinker, a 1995 graduate of Shadle Park High School, is the son of Charlie and Dolores Hinker, Spokane; and Georgia and Richard Lauren, Vancouver, Wash.

Army Pvt. Thomas Elam graduated from basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Mo. He is the son of John and Kristi Elam, Spokane, and a 1997 graduate of University High School.

Army Reserve Pvt. George Underwood graduated from basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. He is the son of Patricia Underwood of Newman Lake.

Army Pvt. Jesse Garland graduated from basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo.

Garland, a 1997 graduate of North Central High School, is the son of Allen Garland, Spokane; and Judi Garland, Sandpoint.

Matthew Hilsen, a student at North Central High School, was one of 350 students nationwide invited to attend The National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., last November.

Hilsen is an honor-roll student who received academic letters for five semesters.

He was also voted Outstanding Student of the Year and was listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students in 1996 and 1997.

Gonzaga University’s debate team took four of the top six team awards and four of the top five individual awards at the University of Puget Sound Logger Invitational Tournament last fall.

John Voight and Aaron Moburg-Jones won the tournament and took first and third individual honors, respectively.

The teams of Kristin Olson and Brad Headridge finished third; Sarah Peterson and Casey Kelly, fifth; and Josh Yake and Shawn Hummel, sixth.

Other individual winners were: Moburg-Jones, third; Hummel, fourth; Peterson, fifth; Headridge, eighth; and Olson and Kelly, tied for 10th.

The culinary arts program at Spokane Community College received a $150,000 scholarship endowment from the family of the late Hector Boiardi, founder of the ChefBoy Ar Dee food line.

The award will be placed in an endowment so the principal remains intact while scholarships are drawn from its interest.

The first scholarships will be awarded next fall.

Good Deeds

Express Personnel Services, a temporary services agency, donated $500 to Gonzaga University to support a student in the doctoral program for educational leadership.
