Gu Spoils Debut For UW

Gonzaga University helped christen Husky Ballpark by hitting three home runs and defeating the defending Pac-10 North baseball champion Washington Huskies 4-3 Friday in Seattle.

A two-run home run by George Arnott gave Gonzaga a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and solo homers by Bo Hart and Ryan Burke helped keep the Bulldogs (2-2) in the lead.

GU’s Matt Siwek (1-0) shut down the Huskies (5-3), allowing two runs on seven hits in seven inning. Nick Hess picked up his first save of the season, allowing one run on three hits over two innings.

UW’s Matt Hampton (0-2) allowed all four Gonzaga runs, working 8-1/3 innings and giving up eight hits.

Whitworth lost two games at the Banana Belt tournament, falling to Central Washington 8-3 and Albertson College 13-6.

Against Central Washington, Mike Horner had two hits and three RBIs for the Pirates.

Against Albertson, Jason Francek was 3 for 4, with a home run and two RBIs. Justin McKitterick was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Jeff Quinton went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Track

Eastern Washington’s men are in sixth place, as are the Eagles’ women, entering the final day of the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track Championships in Bozeman, Mont.

Top finishers for the EWU men were Elondrus Lee (U-Hi), second in the long jump at 23 feet, 8-1/4 inches; and Kevin Whitson, second in the 35-pound weight throw at 60-10-1/2.

For the EWU women, Taneka Sauls was second in the long jump at 19 feet. Seville Broussard posted the fastest time in the 55-meter hurdles preliminaries, clocking 7.95 seconds.

MSU’s Emily Thompson (Mead) was second in the 5,000 meters.

Swimming

Sophomore Erin Eldridge may become the first Washington State swimmer to compete in the NCAA meet.

In a preliminary heat of the 100-yard breaststroke at the Pac-10 women’s swimming championships in Long Beach, Calif., Eldridge bettered the NCAA optional qualifying time by finishing in 1 minute, 3.28 seconds. She placed sixth in the final with a time of 1:04.39.

Washington State’s other top-10 finish was in the 200 medley relay, where Anna Hohmann, Eldridge, Mindy Griffiths and Jessica Chisholm were eighth in 1:46.85.

Defending national champion Stanford leads with USC second. Washington is seventh and WSU eighth in the nine-team event that concludes today. Oregon does not have a team.

Golf

Michael Rorholm and Scott Shagool of Spokane won a four-hole sudden-death playoff to capture the Top-Flite/Etonic Shootout golf tournament in Tacoma.

Rorholm and Shagool (63-68-65-196) took a two-stroke lead into the final round, but were caught by Mike Gove and Jeff Coston (69-64-63-196). On the fourth extra hole, Rorholm made a 20-foot putt for birdie and the championship.

Also from Spokane, Steve Prugh and Chris Curran (69-69-67-205) finished tied for 11th.
