Kosher Meal Will Be March 8 Music By Chutzpah Klezmer Orchestra Planned As Part Of Event

Members of Temple Beth Shalom have been laboring in the kitchen for weeks in preparation for their annual kosher dinner, and the time is nearly at hand.

Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 8. The popular event will feature kosher roast brisket of beef and other tasty traditional dishes and desserts.

The Chutzpah Klezmer Orchestra will play Jewish klezmer music with its Greek, Central European and Eastern European roots.

Dinners-to-go and take-home treats will be available at the deli bar.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 11 and under. The dinner usually sells out, so don’t delay in getting those tickets.

For more information, call 747-3304. The temple’s address is 1322 E. 30th.

Flannery talk will be Tuesday

“The Catholic Intellectual and Cultural Tradition in Higher Education” will be discussed in Gonzaga University’s Flannery Lecture by Monika Hellwig, executive director of the Association of Catholic Churches and Universities and the former Landegger Professor of Theology at Georgetown University.

The annual free, public lecture will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Spokane Room of the student union building on campus.

The Catholic Church’s very old and rich intellectual and cultural tradition provides fertile ground for creative initiatives reaching into the future, Hellwig said.

Each year an outstanding theologian presents the Flannery Lecture, made possible by a gift from the late Maude and Milo Flannery.

Union Gospel banquet planned

The Valley Doubletree Inn will be the site of the Union Gospel Mission’s 47th annual banquet on March 13. “Together We Can Change Their World” is this year’s theme.

The event includes a luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. and dinner from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Carrie Kay, a Christian vocalist from Western Washington who once sang in nightclubs, will be featured at both meals. Rep. George Nethercutt will also be in attendance, schedule permitting.

The meals are free, but donations will be accepted to help cover expenses. Because of limited seating, tickets are required.

Call the mission office at 535-8510.

Members prepare for New Year

Baha’i members begin their annual period of fasting on Sunday to prepare for their faith’s New Year on March 21.

Some 5 million people worldwide will abstain from food and drink between sunrise and sunset from March 2 to 20.

In Spokane, the New Year will be observed with a dinner at 6 p.m. on March 21 at the Avalon Dance Studio, 115 E. Boone, followed by a dance exhibition, music and dancing.

For more information on the Baha’i faith or the dinner, call 326-0152.

Dinner and auction scheduled

St. Aloysius School will present its annual dinner and auction at 5 p.m. next Saturday in the school cafeteria, 611 E. Mission.

Items up for bid include a basketball autographed by John Stockton, Utah Jazz game tickets, a private wine-tasting party at the Caterina Winery, an autographed copy of “The Road Ahead” by Bill Gates, and several gift certificates to area restaurants and businesses.

Tickets are $25. To make reservations, call the school at 489-7825.

Worshipful dance will be taught

The New Jerusalem Church, 8019 E. Liberty, will present a series of workshops to teach how to worship through dance. Several Messianic Jewish praise songs will be presented in preparation for April’s Passover Seder.

The workshops, from 6 to 9 p.m., will be Wednesday and March 18 and 25. There is a $1 fee per session.

Call the Messianic Jewish Fellowship of Spokane at 465-9523 for more information.

Prayer will be world around

“Who Is My Neighbor?” is the theme for this year’s World Day of Prayer on Friday sponsored by Church Women United.

The ecumenical service, written by women from Madagascar, an Indian Ocean island off southwest Africa, will delve into their concept of Fihavanana - the bond between people, a unity, a sharing of sorrow and happiness.

Fihavanana is exemplified in Malagasy proverbs and sayings, including, “Whichever hand is cut, the whole body feels the pain”; “However little food we have, we will share it”; and “It is better to lose money than friendship.”

Services will be conducted at several times and sites throughout Spokane:

7 a.m.: Casey’s Restaurant, 2126 N. Monroe.

10 a.m.: Salvation Army, 222 E. Indiana.

11 a.m.: Sinto Senior Center, 1124 W. Sinto.

1 p.m.: Lilac Plaza, 7007 N. Wiscomb; Morning Star Baptist Church, 1829 E. Mallon; and Rockwood Manor, 2903 E. 25th.

A noon luncheon will be served at the Sinto Senior Center for $1.50. For reservations, call 327-2861 by 1 p.m. Thursday.

Church fasting begins Sunday

A Season of Fasting and Prayer, sponsored by the Greater Spokane Association of Evangelicals, will be observed in 51 churches Sunday through April 9.

Churches that have signed up for designated days will open their doors for prayer time at 7 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. In addition, members will be encouraged to fast on their church’s appointed day so there will be a continual group of people praying and fasting during each of the 40 days of Lent. For a complete schedule of participating churches, call 468-4855.
