Bogus C-Notes Passed At Businesses

Amy Scribner Staff writer

Police received reports of two more counterfeit bills Dec. 23, the latest in a rash of counterfeit currency in the area, said Spokane Police spokesman Dick Cottam.

A cashier at the Pretty Girls business, 2012 E. Sprague, received a fake $100 bill about midnight Dec. 23 when a man asked for change. The cashier called police after she examined the bill.

Officers questioned the man, who was still inside the business. They obtained his identification and turned the bill over to the Secret Service, Cottam said.

The man was not detained.

The afternoon of Dec. 23, a vendor at the STA Plaza was given a counterfeit $100 bill when a man purchased some merchandise with it. The vendor went to a nearby Seafirst Bank to get smaller bills, and a teller identified the bill as counterfeit. It, too, was turned over to Secret Service officials by police, Cottam said.

Secret Service agents are investigating more than 40 reports of counterfeit bills being passed in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene since mid-November. People who suspect they’ve received a counterfeit bill, or anyone with information, is asked to call the Secret Service at 353-2532.
