Inner-Being Provides Information
Dear Nancy: My mother is 81 and lives in a nursing home. She’s restricted to a wheelchair and is becoming very forgetful; I think she has Alzheimer’s. Recently I had to go out of town for work and felt an urgent need to visit her before I left, which I did. About two weeks into my work assignment I had this dream. - Louis
I’m with my mother in the nursing home and I hear a voice say earnestly, “Your mom is going to die.” My mother looks at me from her bed and begins to gouge her eyes out with her fingers. I turn away in sadness and start to cry. I hear the message again, “Your mom is going to die.” I look back and she’s lying on a gurney. She looks nothing like herself. Her skin is a peach color and it’s slimy wet. I wake up crying.
Dear Louis: There are times in all of our lives when messages from our inner-being, our spiritual guide, or God, breaks through into our conscious minds to give us needed information. This dream, coupled with your “urgent need” to visit your mother, is such an instance. I’m so glad you followed that feeling and saw her.
The message was strong and clear: At 81 years old and infirm, your mother may be preparing to pass on. Nobody knows how much longer she’ll live, but this dream is a clear indication it’s time you be with her as much as possible to show your love, resolve any conflicts and forgive or seek forgiveness.
Eyes allow us to see the world around us. As we prepare to enter the afterlife, many people shut down the senses. Sight, taste, smell and hearing are often weaker or absent. Perhaps your dream is portraying this process.
Seeing your mother on the gurney, peach colored and slimy wet, is reminiscent of birth. Most spiritual traditions and religions believe death is a birth into a new life. Your dream may be showing you that your mother is ready for that birth process.
Dreams like this are emotionally wrenching, Louis. But they also carry gifts of insight and knowledge. Love and support your mother by being with her as much as you can through this time. And be thankful to the dream world for bringing you this important message.
Reader tips: Most dreams come to us in the form of symbolism and metaphor, and we are called to understand them using this universal language, this “soul’s code.”
Although it’s a natural ability, it often requires desire and intent to learn the language. There’s no better way to do this than to follow your dreams, taking time to sit with them and record them in a journal.
Dream dictionaries are available, but they can lead you astray. Ask yourself what a particular dream image means to you and what associations you make with it.
Dreams that bear direct messages are usually straightforward and need no interpretation. Be sure to respond to these messages in a positive way.
This column is intended as entertainment. But psychologists who work with clients’ dreams say that dreams can hold a tremendous amount of significance; a particularly disturbing or repetitive dream may indicate the need to see a therapist.
