Obituaries

Richard Webb Post Falls

Private family service for Richard Vernon Webb, 60, was held. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Webb, who was born in Salmon, Idaho, died Dec. 23.

He lived in Blackfoot, Idaho, before moving to Coeur d’Alene 26 years ago.

Mr. Webb was a self-employed well driller and was a member of the local Bass Club and the Moses Lake Bass Club.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; a son, Barry Webb of Hauser Lake, Idaho; four daughters, Kimberley Pletzer of Maryland, Cindy Lash of Post Falls, Mindy Lickfold of Coeur d’Alene and Vickie Evans of Kennewick; a brother, Andy Webb of Blackfoot; a sister, Elaine Dieffenbacher of Richland; his mother, Dorothy of Blackfoot; and 11 grandchildren.

John Jones Post Falls

Service for John R. Jones, 79, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mr. Jones, who was born in Texas, died Tuesday.

He served with the Marine Corps during World War II and later lived in Oregon and California.

Mr. Jones retired as a stationary engineer from Stanford Medical Center in 1980 and then moved to the Coeur d’Alene area.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 889.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Hazel; a son, Eldon Jones of California; three daughters, Sandra Johnson of Post Falls, Peggie Bickley of Oregon, and Camella Jones of Indiana; a brother, William Houghton of Texas; two sisters, Fronia Barrickman and Sylvia Fairbetter, both of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Shirley Bromley Rathdrum, Idaho

Service for Shirley Patricia Bromley, 76, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Rathdrum Bible Church. Burial will follow at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bromley, who was born in Eugene, Ore., died Monday.

She grew up and attended school in Eugene and moved to Rathdrum in 1977.

Mrs. Bromley was active with the Rathdrum Bible Church School and the Rathdrum Senior Center.

Her husband, Dan died in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Greg Bromley; a grandson, Ty Bromley; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rathdrum Bible Church.

Vivian Marek St. Maries

Service for Vivian Ruth Marek, 62, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Born in Spokane, Mrs. Marek died Monday.

She grew up in Ione, Wash., and graduated from high school in Metaline Falls in 1953.

Mrs. Marek lived in Lewiston, Idaho, Montana, California and Forks, Wash., before settling in St. Maries in 1968.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Norman “Bud”; three sons, James and Bob Marek, both of St. Maries, and Burt Marek of Sequim, Wash.; a daughter, Sherral Bates of St. Maries; a sister, Hazel Casper of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Mary Burgad Veradale

Vigil service for Mary T. Burgad, 70, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burgad, who was born in Fargo, N.D., died Monday.

She graduated from high school in Fargo and moved to Spokane in 1951.

Mrs. Burgad worked for Keytronics for several years until 1989.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Her husband, Albert, died in 1963.

She is survived by two sons, William and David Burgad, both of Spokane; two daughters, Janet Green of Spokane and Catherine Peterson of Kirkland, Wash.; a brother, William Burrell of Seattle; two sisters, Margaret Wald of Greenacres and Ann Sweet of Spokane; and seven grandchildren.

Emily Codispoti Hayden, Idaho

Memorial service for Emily Marie Codispoti, 76, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow, Idaho. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Codispoti, who was born in Chicago, died Sunday.

She grew up in Chicago and Iowa, graduating from high school in 1939.

Mrs. Codispoti went on to attend Southern Illinois Teacher’s College, graduating in 1944 and then taught mathematics and physical education in Illinois.

She moved to California in 1946 and co-operated a pizzeria for 18 years. She moved to Moscow in 1977.

Mrs. Codispoti worked toward a master’s degree in early childhood education at the University of Idaho and then opened “Emily’s Kinderhaven” daycare in Moscow.

She operated the daycare for 10 years and then moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1996.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Tony; 10 children, Eleanore Neidiger of Pullman, Paul, David, Jon, Burt, Barry, Annette and Janet Codispoti, all of California, Margaret Davaz of Post Falls, and Mark Codispoti of Bothell, Wash.; and 18 grandchildren.

Dennis Davis Hayden, Idaho

Service for Dennis Reed Davis, 45, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Davis died Monday from injuries received in a logging accident.

He was born in Arkansas and grew up in Arkansas and St. Maries, attending St. Maries High School.

Mr. Davis served with the Army during the Vietnam War and later returned to St. Maries.

He attended heavy equipment operators school in 1973 and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1974 and continued a career in logging.

Mr. Davis graduated with electronics experience from Spokane Technical Institute in 1984 and was past president of the Christian Women’s bowling League and coached softball.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; a son, Chris Davis of Hayden; a daughter, Kelly Davis of Post Falls; his father, Clyde Davis of St. Maries; two brothers, Tony Davis of Spokane and Paul Davis of St. Maries; and three sisters, Debbie Haines and Gail Studer, both of St. Maries and Sherry Cook of Fernwood, Idaho.

John Edwards St. Maries

Service for John O. Edwards, 76, was Wednesday at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Edwards, who was born in Webb, Idaho, died Sunday.

He grew up and attended school in Lewiston and served in the Army Air Corps and the Army until 1945.

Mr. Edwards settled in Port Angeles, Wash., after his military service and then returned to Lewiston in 1954 and worked as a self employed logger.

He moved to the Benewah Valley near St. Maries in 1957 and co-owned a sawmill.

He moved to St. Maries in 1980 and opened a new sawmill, retiring in 1991.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy; two sons, Ken and Gary Edwards, both of St. Maries; two daughters, Linda St. John of St. Maries and Kathy Dompier of Spokane; two brothers, Russell Edwards of Lewiston and Donald Edwards of Emmett, Idaho; a sister, Helen Furchtnich of Lewiston; and 10 grandchildren.

Ella ‘Emar’ (Symmes) Ferris Spokane

Memorial service for Ella Margaret “Emar” (Symmes) Ferris, 82, will be held at a later date. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ferris, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Monday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Robert Ferris, died in 1994.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Ferris of Spokane and Robert Ferris of Sea-Tac, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Quinn ‘Jiggs’ Carlon St. John, Wash.

Service for Quinn “Jiggs” Carlon, 79, was Monday at the Community Church in Malden, Wash. Burial followed at the Pine City Cemetery in Malden.

Mr. Carlon, who was born in Malden, died Wednesday.

He graduated from Pine City (Wash.) High School and then worked for Standard Oil Co. in Rosalia, Wash., until entering the Navy.

Mr. Carlon served during World War II in the Atlantic and South Pacific.

In 1969 he married Ferne Stipe Reed in Colfax and they moved to St. John. He then farmed the family homestead near Pine City, retiring in 1979.

Mr. Carlon was a member of the Malden Community Church, Malden Masonic Lodge, Kenova Grange, Pine City-Malden Gun Club and St. John Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Loren Carlson of Pine City; two stepdaughters, Janet Cerdes of Evergreen, Colo., and Debbie Warwick of Colfax; a stepson, Douglas Reed of Cranbury, N.J.; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Katherine Connelly Spokane

Memorial service for Katherine Connelly, 76, was Wednesday at the South Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church. Burial service is planned for noon Friday at the Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Gig Harbor, Wash.

Mrs. Connelly, who was born in Angora, Neb., died Monday.

She graduated from high school and from vocational school in McCook, Neb.

Mrs. Connelly worked in the civil service as a cook at Payne Field Air Force Base in Everett and was then transferred to McCord Air Force Base in Tacoma. She retired in 1985.

She moved to Spokane 10 years ago.

Mrs. Connelly was a member of AmVets Auxiliary No. 1 in Tacoma and a Veterans Administration Voluntary representative for Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Spokane.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Ripke of Spokane; a son, Albert Hutchinson of Dale City, Va.; two sisters, Ruby Kahler of Curtis, Neb., and Violet Fulton of Gering, Neb.; a brother, JayE Folkers of Columbia, Ga.; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Lloyd Ayler Spokane

Private cremation service was held for Lloyd E. Ayler, 82.

Mr. Ayler, an 80-year resident of Spokane, died Wednesday.

He was born in Winona, Wash., and moved to Spokane at age 2.

Mr. Ayler learned to be an electrician through trade school and began working in 1942 for ALCOA as an electrician. The company was bought by Kaiser Aluminum in 1946 and he worked there until his retirement in 1977.

He was a member of the Steelworkers of America Local 329.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Agnes; a daughter, Janice Ayler of Spokane; a son, Steven Ayler of Seabeck, Wash.; a sister, Marjorie Hooper of Spokane; and two grandsons.

Willard Gaw Spokane

No service will be held for Willard Gaw, 88, at his request. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Gaw, who was born in Nedding, Maine, died Sunday.

He served in the Coast Guard for 12 years and then worked as a truck driver for Bekins Mayflower and Tim’s Transfer. He retired in 1962.

Mr. Gaw was a resident of Spokane for 54 years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Robert Gaw of Reno, Nev.; and a daughter, Beverly Gaw of Santa Clara, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

George Bowmer Plummer, Idaho

Service for George B. Bowmer, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Plummer Bible Church. Burial will follow at Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa, Wash. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bowmer, who was born in Baker, Mont., died Monday.

He moved to Plummer in 1917 and worked as a logger in the area.

Mr. Bowmer served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

In 1949 he married Virginia Abey in Latah, Wash., and they made their home in Plummer.

He logged until 1966 when he purchased the Plummer Texaco service station. He operated the station for 11 years and retired in 1977.

Mr. Bowmer was a member of the John Bloomquist Post 69 American Legion and Plummer Bible Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Marsha Bowmer of Spokane and Laurie Niebuhr of Plummer; a sister, Freda King of Fairfield, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Dwain Dent Spokane

Memorial service for Dwain E. Dent, 73, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435. Private inurnment was held. Hennessey-Smith Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dent, who died Friday, was born in Eckville, Alberta.

He served in the Navy in the South Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Gage.

Mr. Dent worked in road construction and was a 38-year Spokane resident.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 370.

Survivors include two sons, Gary and David Dent, both of Spokane; a daughter, Deseri Dilley of Forks, Wash.; a brother, Elwood Dent of Walla Walla; three sisters, Lorene Donley, Carol Jean Franck and Janice Parish, all of College Place, Wash.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pete Pettersen Spokane

Memorial mass for Pete Andrew Pettersen, 38, was Saturday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Mr. Pettersen, who was born in Jerome, Idaho, died Dec. 23.

He was a 35-year Spokane resident and worked as a laminator in the acrylic manufacturing business.

Survivors include a son, Michael Pettersen Vando of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Autumn Vando of Spokane; two brothers, Rolf Pettersen of Butte, Mont., and Fred Pettersen of Peoria, Ariz.; and three sisters, Mary Hickman, Dianna Chaney, Barbara Pettersen, all of Spokane.

Micheal ‘Big Mike’ Garrett Spokane

Service for Micheal J. ‘Big Mike’ Garrett, 48, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Garrett, who was born in Delta, Colo., died Dec. 24.

He served in the Army First Airborne Division.

Mr. Garrett worked as a commercial truck driver and was employed by several companies.

He was also a partner in Triple G Landscaping.

Survivors include his wife, Norma; two sons, Aaron and Mike Garrett, both of Spokane; two daughters, Rana Garrett and Michelle Muck, both of Spokane; his father and stepmother, James and Mattie Garrett of Grass Valley, Calif.; two brothers, Steve Garrett of Salem, Ore., and Terry Garrett of Spokane; a sister, Pat Garrett of Salem, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.
