Katherine Mayo, the No. 1 female jockey in the country in 1996, was seriously injured in a race Friday at Portland Meadows when her horse darted left shortly out of the gate and tossed her against the inner rail. Mayo, 33, suffered a spinal separation, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, and fractures in her back, said her husband and manager Jim Sorensen. She was in serious condition late Friday at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.

The New South Wales state government reportedly will have to find another $325 million to stage the 2000 Olympics.

A Sydney, Australia, newspaper reported today that all government departments will be ordered to cut normal spending to pay for the extra costs.

The Colorado Rockies re-signed left-handed relief pitcher Bruce Ruffin to a minor-league contract, bringing back the team’s career saves leader.

Ruffin, 34, missed most of last season with back and elbow problems.
