Katherine Mayo, the No. 1 female jockey in the country in 1996, was seriously injured in a race Friday at Portland Meadows when her horse darted left shortly out of the gate and tossed her against the inner rail. Mayo, 33, suffered a spinal separation, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, and fractures in her back, said her husband and manager Jim Sorensen. She was in serious condition late Friday at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.
