U.N. Offices In Baghdad Attacked

Associated Press

Two rocket-propelled grenades have been fired at the offices of the U.N. weapons inspectors in Baghdad, the Iraqi government said today.

“Parties which do not want stable relationship between Iraq and U.N. weapons inspectors,” fired the grenades, the Information Ministry said in a statement. It did not say when the attack occurred.

The grenades were fired Friday night, Dennis Halliday, a Baghdad representative for the U.N. secretary-general, said in a telephone interview from New York.

“This is not to be exaggerated,” Halliday said. The grenade was unarmed, he said, and did not explode.

There was minor damage to a window and some walls, he said.

The attack follows two months of tension between the Iraqi government and the United Nations over U.N.-mandated weapons inspections. The world body has demanded that inspectors have access to some 60 sites throughout Iraq that Baghdad has declared off-limits.
