Harland ‘H.D.’ Gilliam Cheney

Graveside service for Harland “H.D.” Gilliam, former Pullman Police Chief, will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Spokane Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-Cheney is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gilliam, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday. He was 75.

He served in the Navy during World War II and then entered law enforcement in Pullman.

In 1949 he married Beatrice Caine in Pullman.

Mr. Gilliam retired as the Pullman Police Chief in 1973. His family then moved to Cheney.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Doug Gilliam of Spokane and Craig Gilliam of Cheney; a daughter, Lynn Thompson of Cheney; and a grandson.

Bertha Olson Spokane

Service for Bertha Jane Olson, 85, will be at 10 a.m. today at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Olson, a 52-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

She was born in Opportunity, and retired from General Telephone and Electric after more than 30 years.

She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and was a pediatrics department volunteer at Deaconess Medical Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Bodelson of Monroe, Wash.; a sister, Mary Margaret Caryl of Edmonds, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Lavina Gauthier Spokane

Service for Lavina A. Gauthier, 87, is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Gauthier, who was born in North Dakota, died Thursday.

She moved to Spokane in 1957 and was a homemaker.

Her first husband, Raymond Emerson, died in 1955, and her second husband, Joseph Gauthier, died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Miller of Deer Park; a sister, Dorothy Ingwersen of Sacramento, Calif.; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

Peter Scott Spokane

Service for Peter H. Scott, 94, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Scott, a Spokane resident since 1971, died Wednesday.

He was born in Denmark and worked as a farmer in Spangle for many years.

Mr. Scott was a member of the Spangle Masonic Lodge 131, Scottish Rite Bodies, El Katif Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star Delphi Chapter 188, the Fairfield Grange and served as a father advisor for Rainbow Girls.

His wife, Magda Scott, died in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Anders Scott of Spangle; a daughter, Eileen Scott of Las Vegas; a sister of Denmark; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

John Slusser Spokane

Memorial service for John C. Slusser, 66, will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at the West Central Community Center. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Slusser, who was born in Brooks, Alberta, died Dec. 21.

He served in the Navy and Air Force during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Air Force as a technical sergeant.

He was a member of the West Spokane Kiwanis, Disabled American Veterans No. 45 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Slusser participated in the Lend a Crib program, Spokane Duck Races, Special Olympics and the Kiwanis auctions.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene; two sons, John Slusser II of California and James Slusser of Colorado; two daughters, Claudia Church and Linda Fleming, both of Washington state; a brother, Phillip Slusser of Washington state; two sisters, Sylvia Kerr and Jean Putnam, both of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Central Community Center.
