Higher Ed Study Starts At Ewu

Compiled From Wire Services

Gov. Gary Locke’s call for a study of higher education services in Spokane has triggered a series of meetings that begin today.

Eastern Washington University’s board of trustees will hold a special public meeting at 10 a.m. today to brief new trustees. The meeting will be on the second floor of the Pence Union Building at the Cheney campus.

Eastern’s old board last month unanimously rejected a request by Sen. Jim West, R-Spokane, to prepare a plan to merge with Washington State University.

Since that time, Locke appointed three new trustees to Eastern’s board. He also ordered the Higher Education Coordinating Board to review West’s merger idea and make recommendations by Feb. 15 on the best way to provide a four-year education to students in Spokane County.

On Wednesday, the Joint Center for Higher Education meets at noon on the fourth floor of the Spokane Intercollegiate Research and Technology Institute building, 665 N. Riverpoint Blvd., to review the center’s role in the HEC Board study.

Members of the HEC Board have scheduled a fact-finding trip to Eastern’s campus Jan. 13 and will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 14 in the auditorium of the Riverpoint Higher Education Park classroom building, 665 N. Riverpoint Blvd.

The HEC Board may be reached at (360) 753-7800.
