Sheriff Will Get Pay Cut In 1999
Spokane County commissioners voted Tuesday to cut the sheriff’s salary starting in 1999.
The unanimous decision won’t affect Sheriff John Goldman. He has announced he won’t run for re-election when his term expires at the end of this year.
State law prohibits counties from reducing the salary of elected officials during the current term.
The next sheriff will earn $82,000 a year, rather than $90,344.
County Commissioner Phil Harris, who pushed for a salary cut in 1996, said last month that he would not support the current proposal. Harris said Tuesday that he had taken that stand because he was afraid the resolution would eliminate a salary freeze commissioners adopted in 1996.
Harris said he decided to vote for the cut after the resolution was changed to stipulate that the sheriff’s pay can’t change again without commissioners’ approval.
