Men’s Top 25

Allen Edwards scored all 19 of his points in the second half and No. 6 Kentucky defeated Georgia 90-79 at Athens, Ga., Tuesday night, giving Wildcats coach Tubby Smith a triumphant return in his first visit since leaving the Bulldogs after last season.

Smith spent two seasons at Georgia, guiding the Bulldogs to their first consecutive 20-victory seasons, before succeeding Rick Pitino at Kentucky last May.

It also was Smith’s first time coaching against his son, G.G. Smith, Georgia’s junior point guard, who scored eight points as Georgia (8-6, 0-2 Southeastern Conference) lost to Kentucky for the ninth straight time and 16th time in 17 games.

Kentucky (13-2, 2-0 SEC) took its biggest lead of the opening half at 35-26 when Saul Smith, a freshman reserve guard at Kentucky and younger brother of G.G., hit a 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds before intermission.

Miami 76, (8) UConn 67

Lucas Barnes scored 14 points and sparked a second-half spurt to help the Hurricanes move closer to their first Top 25 ranking since 1960 by beating the Huskies in Miami.

Miami improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big East Conference. UConn, which had won nine consecutive games, fell to 13-2 and 3-1 despite 31 points by Richard Hamilton.

Mario Bland scored 14 points for Miami before a crowd of 8,247, sixth-largest in school history.

Indiana 80, (17) Michigan 62

At Bloomington, Ind., the Hoosiers weathered a big Wolverines rally and a big temper outburst by coach Bob Knight.

Andrae Patterson scored 19 points and William Gladness added 14, including six during a 15-2 second-half streak, to lead the win.

The victory by Indiana (10-5, 1-2 Big Ten) kept the Hoosiers from matching their worst conference start since they lost their first four games in Knight’s first year as coach in 1972. It also snapped a six-game winning streak by the Wolverines (12-4, 2-1).

Indiana took a 12-point lead midway through the first half but managed only six more points the rest of the period. Knight, meanwhile, spent much of that time screaming at referee Sam Lickliter for an outof-bounds call against the Hoosiers.

He also yelled at Hoosier Michael Lewis on the bench, but ended the conversation with a playful tap on the head.

(23) Rh. Island 83, St. Joseph’s 68

At Philadelphia, Tyson Wheeler tied a career high with 35 points and had a school-record nine 3-pointers as the Rams rallied to beat the Hawks.

Two days after Cuttino Mobley had tied Wheeler’s record with eight 3-pointers against Temple, Wheeler set a new mark as the Rams (9-2, 2-0 Atlantic 10) won their third straight.

St. Joseph’s (4-5, 0-2) got 23 points from Rashid Bey and 15 points from Rob Haskins.
