Pirates Just Miss Century Mark In Blowout Victory Over Boxers
Star Olson and the Whitworth women played out-of-this universe basketball Friday night against Pacific University.
Olson, a sophomore shooting guard from East Valley, scored a career-high 25 points in the Pirates’ 97-74 Northwest Conference win in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Five Pirates scored in double figures, with Olson leading the way on 11-of-14 shooting in 28 minutes. Olson had been averaging 6.6 points per game this season.
Andrea Sherer added 16 points, and Emily Stuenkel chipped in with 14 points and 11 assists.
“For the most part, I’ve been frustrated with my offense,” Olson said. “Tonight, I concentrated on good defense, and that always gets me more intense and makes me play better offense.”
The Pirates (3-6, 2-1) began to pull away midway through the first half, outscoring the Boxers 28-4. Olson had 10 of her 16 first-half points during the run, Stuenkel passes triggering fast breaks.
The Pirates built their biggest lead, 48-21, with 3:02 left in the first half before Pacific drained back-to-back 3-pointers. Whitworth led 53-32 at the half
The Pirates’ 97 points were two short of school record.
