Even Years Later, Julie’s Basking In The Afterglow
At 57, Julie Christie may no longer be the icy beauty who starred in such films as “Doctor Zhivago” or “Darling.”
But she’s still pretty easy on the eyes, as she proves in Alan Rudolph’s movie “Afterglow.” And she hasn’t lost her sense of self.
When asked by Premiere magazine for her “overriding memory of working on Doctor Zhivago,” she said, “I always fancied the cameraman, I remember. No, it was the assistant cameraman. And the cameraman, for that matter.”
And while having dated notable actors, including Warren Beatty and Terence Stamp, she wasn’t exclusive. “I’ve dated terribly few actors compared to most actresses,” she said. “I’m always amazed why they don’t go further afield. There’s so many professions, crikey!”
Loose talk
Minnie Driver on starring with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in “Good Will Hunting” (in Premiere magazine): “It was like being in a fantastic Y-chromosome sandwich.”
And Robin is all a Quivers about it
Howard Stern turns 44 today.
To paraphrase: ‘Boss, boss, complain, complain!’
Dean Valentine, CEO of the television network UPN, predicts that the new “Love Boat” series he is producing (with a new cast), will be a huge hit: “This will be what ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ was to the old ‘Star Trek.”’
Never mind, they’ll probably televise it anyway
Just to let you know: 40,000 of the 152,500 available tickets to view Princess Diana’s grave were sold in the first 24 hours they went on sale. Only 2,500 ticket holders per day will be allowed on Althorp Estate grounds, and all weekend tickets have been taken, along with July 1 (which as all Di-watchers know is the late princess’ birthday).
Note to self: Try to get old job back
Support for Norm MacDonald may not exactly be pouring in, but it’s well-heeled. No less than Chevy Chase, who pioneered the “Saturday Night Live Weekend Update” sketch, says NBC made a mistake by firing MacDonald. “I don’t tune in to the show that much, to be honest with you,” Chase told TV Guide. “But I do love Norm. I think he’s terrific on ‘Update.”’
They probably took it out of petty cash
Today’s good-new item (courtesy of the Associated Press): Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, have donated $1 million to a Norfolk, Va., charity that provides surgery to poor, disfigured children.
It ain’t over until she sings
Roseanne, take two: Remember Roseanne saying that women with weight attract “more men, better men”? Well, word from Los Angeles is that the comic has filed for divorce Thursday from her third husband, former bodyguard Ben Thomas. The cause: irreconcilable differences.
