Magee Ahead By Four With 3-Round Record

Andrew Magee, playing virtually mistake-free golf, shot a 64 Friday to open a four-stroke lead in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic at Bermuda Dunes, Calif.

Magee’s 8-under-par round put him at 21-under, a record for the first three days of the 90-hole tournament.

Stewart Cink, the PGA’s 1997 rookie of the year, and Mark O’Meara were tied for second at 17 under.

At Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Gil Morgan and Gibby Gilbert shot 7-underpar 65s to share a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the MasterCard Championship golf tournament.

One stroke back in the $1 million, 54-hole event are Hugh Baiocchi of South Africa and Argentina’s Vicente Fernandez.

At Orlando, Fla., Jenny Lidback, who slept on the floor to help her aching back, holed a 6-iron from 135 yards out on her way to a 3-under-par 69 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the HealthSouth Inaugural, the first LPGA event of the year.
