WSU Regents Ask State For Endowment

Associated Press

Washington State University regents on Friday asked the Legislature to pass a bill to establish a higher education endowment this year.

An endowment would help colleges recruit and retain the best students and faculty, increase scholarships and pay for the best equipment, the regents said in a resolution.

Regents also approved a 5 percent increase in summer session tuition, to $165 per credit hour for undergraduates and $212 for graduates. Non-residents pay more.

The regents also approved borrowing $2 million from university resources to begin design of a $40 million student recreation center.

Board president Robert Albrecht said WSU is prepared to take direction from the Higher Education Coordinating Board on offering more degree programs in Spokane.

The coordinating board is studying a proposal to merge Eastern Washington University and Washington State. Eastern regents have rejected the idea.

“WSU’s position is that we stand ready to do what is best for the state in the matter of higher education and recognize the need to bring a research university campus in Spokane,” Albrecht said.
